How far is Mysore from Coimbatore and how long does it take?

Mysore is about 195 km from Coimbatore, roughly 4.5 hours by road. That makes the Coimbatore to Mysore run possible as a one day trip, though the day is mostly driving. Our Mysore one day trip does it in a single day; most families prefer to stay at least one night.

What are the best places to visit in Mysore?

The main places are Mysore Palace, Chamundi Hills and the Srirangapatna temples and tombs on the Bangalore road. A local day covers the palace, the hill and one or two more stops. A second day lets you do Srirangapatna and Ranganathittu. This is the list most people want when they search for Mysore places to visit. These are the famous places in Mysore, and visiting places in Mysore by private car means one driver for the palace, the hill and Srirangapatna. Mysore Palace

Mysore Palace is the tourist place in Mysore most visitors see first.

Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV commissioned the present palace in 1897 after a fire destroyed the earlier one, and construction ran until 1912. It has public durbar and marriage halls and about four million visitors a year. During Navaratri the palace is lit by around 100,000 bulbs on each of the nine nights. Chamundi Hills and Chamundeshwari Temple

The temple sits on Chamundi Hills, about 13 km from the city. A staircase of about 1,000 steps leads up, and a large granite Nandi stands near the 700th step. Most visitors drive up. The goddess is a fierce form of Shakti and the temple is counted among the 18 Shakta pithas.

Srirangapatna

Srirangapatna is about 15 km from Mysore (about 20 km by road). It has the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple on the Kaveri, Tipu Sultan's Daria Daulat Bagh summer palace built in 1784, and the Gumbaz tomb of Tipu Sultan and Hyder Ali. Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary is nearby.

Beyond the palace and the hill, the Mysore district tourism page lists Jaganmohan Palace (built in 1861), the Railway Museum (started in 1979), Mysuru Zoo (started in 1892) and St Philomena's Church (built in 1804 in Gothic style).
