Where is Dandeli located?

Dandeli is a taluk in Uttara Kannada district, in the Malenadu region of north-west Karnataka, on the bank of the Kali river. It lies about 74 km from Hubli and 104 km from Karwar, the district headquarters. From Coimbatore it is about 705 km by road, a drive of about 13 hours with stops, which is why we sell it as a multi-day trip and not a weekend dash.

What is Dandeli famous for?

Dandeli is known for white-water rafting on the Kali river and for its wildlife sanctuary. The sanctuary is part of the Anshi Dandeli Tiger Reserve and has elephants, gaur, sloth bears and hornbills. Karnataka Tourism says black panthers are frequently sighted here, which is rare in India. The sanctuary covers about 866 sq km, and about 270 bird species have been recorded. Sightings are never guaranteed, so treat the safari as a chance and not a promise.

What are the best places to visit in Dandeli?

Dandeli places to visit fall into two groups: the Kali river for rafting and the forest for safaris. The tourist places in Dandeli that most visitors cover are the river near Ganeshgudi, the wildlife sanctuary, Syntheri Rocks and the Kavala Caves. Among the places to see in Dandeli, Syntheri Rocks and the Kavala Caves are the Dandeli famous places for scenery, while the river is the draw for adventure. These are the Dandeli best places to visit on a 3 day plan, and the Dandeli spots below are the ones we use. Sightseeing in Dandeli is mostly by jeep and boat.

The Kali river and rafting

Karnataka Tourism rates the rafting at Class II to III, suitable for beginners and intermediate rafters. The run is usually 9 to 12 km, depending on the water released from Supa Dam, and the rapids include Adi's Beard and The Stitch. Rafting is mainly around Ganeshgudi, usually from October to June, based on dam flow and forest permission. Safety gear and trained guides are required on every trip, and slots depend on water levels, so pre-booking helps. Kayaking and a coracle ride are available on calmer stretches.

Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary

The sanctuary has deciduous and evergreen forest with teak and bamboo. Syntheri Rocks is listed as a natural wonder, and the Kavala Caves are known for their stalagmite formations. Early open-jeep safaris offer the best chance of wildlife. Ulavi, Supa Dam and Shiroli Peak are other stops we use, depending on your days.

How big is the Dandeli forest and what lives in it?

The Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary covers 866.41 sq km, and neighbouring Anshi National Park adds 339.87 sq km. The two were declared the Anshi Dandeli Tiger Reserve in 2006. In 2015 Karnataka notified the Dandeli Elephant Reserve under Project Elephant, covering 2,321 sq km, the state's second after Mysuru. Wikipedia lists the Indian pangolin, giant Malabar squirrel, dhole, king cobra and mugger crocodile besides the larger animals, and the great hornbill and Malabar pied hornbill among the birds. The town sits at about 473 m, so evenings are cooler than on the coast.

How do the days run on the 3 day Dandeli trip?

Day 1 is the drive from Coimbatore. We leave before dawn, and the evening nature walk near your stay happens only if you arrive in daylight. Day 2 is the river day: rafting, kayaking and a coracle ride, plus the rock pools the operators call the jacuzzi. Day 3 starts with an early jeep safari, followed by Syntheri Rocks, and then the long drive home. Rafting can close on the day because of dam release or forest permission, and if it does we swap in another activity and tell you before you pay for anything extra. Karnataka Tourism says safety equipment and trained river guides are required on every rafting trip.

What is the best time to visit Dandeli?

The Dandeli best time to visit is October to March; Karnataka Tourism gives it as the best season for the sanctuary. From April to June the waterholes dry up, which can help predator sightings near the water that remains. June to September is the south-west monsoon, with heavy rain across the Ghats. Rafting runs on dam release and forest permission, and Karnataka Tourism says it usually runs from October to June. We confirm before you pay.

Which Dandeli package should you choose?

Package Duration From, per person
Dandeli 3 days 3 days, 2 nights ₹13,500
Dandeli adventure package, 4 days 4 days, 3 nights ₹17,000
Gokarna Dandeli 5 days 5 days, 4 nights ₹21,000

If you are looking for a Dandeli trip package or a Dandeli tour package, these three are the full set. The 3 day plan has one travel day each way and one full day for rafting, kayaking and a coracle ride, plus a safari and Syntheri Rocks. The 4 day plan adds a third night, a slower river day and a separate safari day, with Supa Dam and Shiroli Peak. The 5 day plan adds two nights in Gokarna for the beach and temple. If you are asking about a Dandeli trip for 2 days, note that with a 13 hour drive each way, a 2 day plan leaves no time on the river. We recommend 3 days at the least.

How much does a Dandeli package cost?

Dandeli packages start at ₹13,500 per person and the 4 day plan runs from ₹17,000 per person. The price depends on group size, the resort and how many nights you stay. One price covers the AC vehicle, driver, fuel, toll, parking and the stay, a 3-star or similar hotel or forest resort confirmed in your quote. The Karnataka permit and entry tax are included. Meals, entry tickets and personal expenses are extra. Call or WhatsApp +91 86101 62373 for a quote.

Can you combine Dandeli with Gokarna or Dudhsagar?

Gokarna is the usual pairing, and our 5 day plan does exactly that. See the Gokarna page for beach options. Dudhsagar Falls lies on the Goa-Karnataka border, in the Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary and Mollem National Park. The usual access is by jeep from Kulem on the Goa side, and Wikipedia notes the railway trek is not allowed. We do not include Dudhsagar in the current packages.
