Where is Hassan and how far is it from Coimbatore?

Hassan sits at about 950 m elevation in southwest Karnataka, roughly 182 km from Bangalore. From Coimbatore it is about 315 km by road, a drive of around 6.5 hours. Our driver picks you up in Coimbatore and stays with you across the temple towns.

Karnataka Tourism calls Hassan the gateway to Hoysala marvels and describes it as the place where the plains meet the Western Ghats. The district is also nicknamed "poor man's Ooty", though it is not a hill station.

What are the Hoysala temples near Hassan?

The Hoysala empire had its capital at Belur and Dwarasamudra, today's Halebidu. Both towns are in Hassan district, and together with Somanathapura they were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023 as the Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas.

  • Chennakeshava Temple, Belur. About 40 km north-west of Hassan. It took over a century and three generations of artisans to build, and carries 42 Madanika sculptures, each different.
  • Hoysaleswara Temple, Halebidu. About 16 km from Belur, a Shiva temple with Ramayana and Mahabharata scenes carved on its walls. It is a protected monument managed by the Archaeological Survey of India.
  • Shravanabelagola. A Jain site with the Gommateshwara statue, in Channarayapatna taluk, about 75 km south-east of Belur on NH 75.

Photography may be restricted in some areas, shoes come off at temples, and walking shoes help on the uneven ground.

When is the best time to visit Hassan?

What makes Hoysala temples different?

Hoysala architecture is known for star-shaped platforms and detailed soapstone carving. At Halebidu the walls carry scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata, and Karnataka Tourism ranks it as the main attraction of Halebeedu. The Chennakesava Temple at Belur took from 1117 to 1235 according to the same source, which is more than a century of work.

What else is in Hassan district?

The district lists the Shettihalli church, partly submerged by the Hemavathi reservoir, Gorur Dam, and the star-shaped Manjarabad Fort and Bisle Ghat near Sakleshpur. The Hasanamba temple gives the city its name. Hassan has a railway junction, but no working airport at the moment, so most visitors arrive by road, which suits a private car.

Rainfall averages about 888 mm a year, mostly from June to October, which is why we avoid those months for temple tours.
