Who built Dharmasthala temple, and what is its history?

No single builder is named in the sources we opened. Karnataka Tourism says the temple is said to have originated about eight centuries ago, when the local village chief Birmanna Pergade was moved to dedicate his life to Dharma, meaning justice. Wikipedia adds that the town was earlier called Kuduma, and that the Madhwa saint Vadirajaswamy of the Sode Matha reconsecrated the linga in the 16th century and named the place Dharmasthala.

The dharmasthala temple history is unusual for its administration. The shrine, which people search for as Dharmasthala Manjunatha, is dedicated to Lord Manjunatha, a form of Shiva. Vaishnavite priests perform the pooja, while the temple is run by the Heggades, a hereditary Jain family, and a Jain Tirthankara and Manjunatha are worshipped on the same ground. The current Pattadhikari named on the temple's site is Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade.

What can you do at Dharmasthala?

Dharmasthala is mainly a darshan and meal stop, with a few sights around it. The temple offers pooja and sevas, including Tulabhara, where a devotee is weighed against rice, coconut or similar items, and Annadana, which Karnataka Tourism describes as free meals served to all pilgrims regardless of caste or religion. Dress modestly in the temple premises. Wikipedia reports about 2,000 pilgrims a day on average, so allow time for queues, and it adds that the temple committee has run free mass weddings since 1972 to cut wedding costs and fight dowry.

  • Manjunatha Temple. The main shrine and the reason for most visits.
  • Lord Bahubali statue. A 39 foot statue on the hill near the temple, carved from a single rock in 1973 according to Wikipedia.

  • Manjusha Museum. Palm-leaf manuscripts, silver jewellery and household objects.
  • Car Museum. Vintage cars owned by Dr. Veerendra Heggade.

The temple's official site lists its helpline and office lines, so check darshan arrangements with them before you travel. Guest house rooms are booked only through the temple's official website, and the site warns about fake websites, calls and WhatsApp messages, so do not pay anyone else for a room. Our package books a hotel, so the guest house is optional.
