How far is Gokarna from Coimbatore, and how long is the drive?

Gokarna is about 675 km from Coimbatore by road, roughly 13.5 hours of driving with breaks. That is a full day on the road each way, so a gokarna trip from Coimbatore works best over 3 days or more. The nearest railway stop is Gokarna Road station, about 10 km from the town, but our trips go by road with pickup and drop in Coimbatore.

What is there to see in a Gokarna trip?

Gokarna has two draws: the Mahabaleshwar Temple and the beaches. The temple is a Shiva temple that holds the Atmalinga. In the legend, Ravana won the Atmalinga from Shiva and Ganesha, disguised as a boy, set it on the ground here. Wikipedia notes that foreigners may not enter the sanctum, and that Shivaratri, usually in February or March, draws large crowds.

Wikipedia describes the beaches as follows: Kudle Beach faces west, while Om Beach, Half Moon Beach, Full Moon Beach and Belekan Beach face south. The main beach is in town. Uttara Kannada also has the Yana rock formations in the Sahyadri forests, and over 70 percent of the district is forest, according to the district tourism page.

When is the best time to visit Gokarna?

October to March is the most comfortable stretch. The southwest monsoon from June to September brings heavy rain to the Karnataka coast and Ghats, and April and May are hot. Beach conditions and sea activities depend on the weather, so plan on the dry months.

Can you combine Gokarna with other places?
