How far is Coorg from Coimbatore?

Coorg (Kodagu) is about 310 km from Coimbatore by road, roughly 6.5 hours of driving with stops. People searching for the coimbatore to coorg distance are usually deciding between a 2 day dash and a longer trip, and the drive is the reason most of our guests pick 3 days or more. Coorg Madikeri is the base for most plans; the town sits at 1,170 m in the Western Ghats. If you are searching coorg to coimbatore, the return leg is the same drive, so we plan the last day to leave by mid morning. The Coorg to Coimbatore distance is the same 310 km as the outward trip.

Our driver picks you up in Coimbatore and stays with you for the whole trip. Several of our plans break the drive by adding Mysore, Chikmagalur or Wayanad.

How many days do you need for a Coorg trip?

Three days is the comfortable minimum for a trip to Coorg from Coimbatore: one day to arrive, one full day of sightseeing around Madikeri, and one to drive back. A 2 day plan works only if you accept about 13 hours in the vehicle for roughly one day of sightseeing. Four to five days lets you add Mysore, Wayanad or Chikmagalur.

Choosing by group: couples usually take the honeymoon plan or a 3 day plan with a quieter hotel, families do best on the 3 or 4 day plans with Mysore, and senior citizens are better served by shorter driving days, which we can arrange. Tell us who is travelling and we match the plan.

What does a Coorg tour package cost, and why does it vary?

What are the best places to see in Coorg?

Most of what visitors come for is around Madikeri. The viewpoint called Raja's Seat is about 1 km west of the Madikeri bus stand. Madikeri Fort was built by the Haleri king Mudduraja in 1681 as a mud fort and later rebuilt under Tipu Sultan. Omkareshwara Temple was built in 1820 by Lingarajendra II. Talacauvery, the source of the Cauvery river, is about 46 km from Madikeri.

Others on the usual list are Gaddige (the Raja's tomb), the General Thimmaiah War Museum, Mandalpatti viewpoint and Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary. Abbey Falls is also listed among Madikeri's attractions. In a 3 day plan we group these by direction so you are not crossing back through town; Talacauvery is the longest single drive from Madikeri, so we give it its own slot. Timings and entry fees change, so we confirm them in your quote instead of listing them here.

The Karnataka Tourism page for Coorg adds more to the list: Abbey Falls, reached through coffee plantations and strongest in the monsoon; Dubare Elephant Camp, where visitors can feed and bathe elephants; the Namdroling Monastery, a Tibetan monastery known as the Golden Temple; Iruppu Falls, a forest waterfall considered sacred; and Bhagamandala, where the Cauvery, Kannike and Sujyothi rivers meet. It gives the district's height as about 900 to 1,750 m. Mandalpatti is reached by jeep, and the page lists river rafting at Barapole, Dubare and Kumarahalli, strongest in the monsoon, along with plantation walks and treks to Tadiandamol, Brahmagiri and Nishani Motte. Ask us before the trip if you want rafting or a trek added, since both depend on the season and water levels.

Coorg food is part of the trip too. The Karnataka Tourism page lists pandi curry (pork with kachampuli vinegar), akki roti, kadumbuttu, bamboo shoot curry, noolputtu and Coorg filter coffee, and recommends homestays and plantation stays for home style meals. Meals are not in the package price, so you can eat where you like. It also notes the Kodava community's distinct saree style and men's attire, and its record of service in the Indian Army.

When is the best time to visit Coorg?

Wikipedia's climate data for Madikeri shows annual rainfall of about 3,210 mm in Madikeri, with July the wettest month at about 952 mm and humidity near 93% in July and August. January is the coolest month, with an average night minimum of about 11 degrees C. Summer daytime highs are around 24 to 27 degrees C.

Where do you stay, and can Coorg be combined with other places?

Most guests stay in or near Madikeri for easy access to the main sights. Your hotel is 3-star or similar and confirmed in the quote before you pay. Coorg pairs naturally with Mysore on the way, with Chikmagalur for coffee country, and with Wayanad if you want to return through Kerala. A coorg trip plan that puts Mysore first and Coorg second also splits the long drive in two.
