How do you reach Badami from Coimbatore?

Badami is about 695 km from Coimbatore, roughly 13 hours of driving, so it is never a one day trip. Our Hampi Badami packages break the journey and visit Hampi first, then Aihole, Pattadakal and Badami before the drive home. We pick you up in Coimbatore, and the Karnataka permit and entry tax are included in your price.

Hampi lies about 140 km southeast of Badami and Aihole, so the two regions fit naturally into one Karnataka heritage trip.

What is a Badami Aihole Pattadakal tour?

It is a day or two among the earliest stone temples of the Chalukya kings. Badami was the capital of the Badami Chalukyas from 540 to 757. Aihole has over 120 stone and cave temples. Pattadakal, about 23 km from Badami, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site listed in 1987 with ten major temples, nine Hindu and one Jain.

Our Hampi Badami 4 day package runs Coimbatore, Hampi, Aihole, Pattadakal, Badami, Coimbatore, with two nights near Hampi and one in Badami. The 5 day plan adds a Chitradurga Fort stop to split the long drive.

What do you see in Badami?

  • The Badami cave temples: four numbered caves. Cave 1 is a Shiva cave, Caves 2 and 3 are dedicated mainly to Vishnu and Cave 4 is Jain. Cave 3 is dated to 578 CE by a Kannada inscription. Cave 2 is reached by 64 steps from Cave 1, and Cave 3 is 60 steps above Cave 2.
  • Agastya Lake, a man-made lake below the caves, formed by an earthen dam faced with stone steps, completed in the 7th century.
  • The Bhutanatha group of temples near the lake. The eastern group was built between the 6th and 8th centuries.

Expect steps and uneven stone, so wear shoes with grip.

What is included in the Badami packages?

The AC vehicle and driver for the whole trip, pickup and drop in Coimbatore, the hotels (3-star or similar, confirmed in your quote), fuel, toll, parking and driver charges, and the Karnataka permit and entry tax. Meals, entry tickets and personal expenses are extra.

What do you see at Aihole and Pattadakal?

At Aihole, the Durga temple has an apsidal layout that resembles Buddhist chaitya halls, though it was originally dedicated to Surya and Vishnu. The Lad Khan temple is an 8th century Shiva temple, and a Jain temple on Meguti hill is dated to 634 CE by the Aihole inscription. Aihole is about 9.7 km from Pattadakal.

At Pattadakal, the Virupaksha temple is the largest and most elaborate monument, dated to about 740 CE and sponsored by Queen Lokamahadevi. The site stands on the west bank of the Malaprabha River.

What does a Badami tour package cost?

Who is a Badami trip for?

History lovers, photographers, families with teenagers and small groups. Because the temples are 6th to 8th century stone carvings in open air, the trip rewards slow looking more than a checklist. We run it from our office at Ganapathy in Coimbatore with our own vehicles and drivers, and pickup is at your home, hotel, Coimbatore airport, railway station or bus stand.

What is the best time to visit Badami?

October to February, when days are milder, is the season Karnataka Tourism gives for Hampi, and it is the sensible window for Badami too, since the two sites share one trip. April and May are hot and the caves and temples give little shade. See the Hampi page for more on timing.
