The park covers 1,456.3 sq km and became a tiger reserve under Project Tiger in 1973. It sits where the Deccan Plateau meets the Western Ghats, between 680 and 1,454 m, and the highest point is Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta, which has a temple at the top.
The park holds Bengal tigers, Asian elephants, gaur, sloth bears, dholes and four-horned antelopes, and has more than 200 bird species. Chital, grey langurs and Indian giant squirrels are the animals most often seen from the road. Tiger sightings are never promised, and we do not promise them either.
The Karnataka Forest Department runs daily open-jeep safaris, mainly in the early morning and late afternoon. Safari tickets are not part of our price, since entry tickets are extra, and we confirm the timings for your date when we send the quote.
The park works best as part of a longer route. The most direct plan is the Bandipur Ooty Tour Package (3 Days), which adds the Nilgiris hill station. For a city and palace stop as well, take the Mysore Ooty 4 days tour package.
If you want to keep forest time in Tamil Nadu too, the Ooty Mudumalai 4 Days Tour Package covers the neighbouring reserve. Bandipur and Mudumalai are both part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, which was set up in 1986 as India's first biosphere reserve and also takes in Nagarhole and Wayanad.

One price covers the AC vehicle, driver, fuel, toll, parking and a 3-star hotel. Meals, entry tickets and personal expenses are extra. Karnataka permit and entry tax are included.
The cost changes with the vehicle size, the hotel and whether you add a safari. Weekends and school holidays raise room rates around Ooty and Mysore, so send us your dates on WhatsApp at +91 86101 62373 and we confirm the hotel in the quote.
October to February is the most comfortable stretch for a safari: the forest is green after the rains and the days are mild. The park has distinct wet and dry seasons, and the dry heat starts in early March and lasts until the monsoon arrives in June. Animals gather near water in the dry months, which some visitors prefer.
The south-west monsoon runs from June to September. Roads stay open, but the forest is wet and visibility is lower.
Yes. National Highways 181 and 766 cross the park, and vehicle movement is restricted on some stretches between 9 pm and 6 am after an elephant was killed by a bus in 2018. We plan the day so the group is through the forest section well before dark.
Mysore is about 80 km from the park. Other trips that pair well are Ooty, Wayanad and Kabini, and Mysore has its own page. See the Karnataka tour packages page for the wider state, or Masinagudi for a jungle stay on the Tamil Nadu side.
