Your 2 nights 3 days Wayanad itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Wayanad via Gundlupet and Bandipur, Chembra Peak, Pookode Lake

    We leave Coimbatore early and reach Wayanad on the Gundlupet road through the Bandipur forest. Keep a camera ready on this stretch. The drive is about 250 km, around 5 to 6 hours with stops, though ghat and forest-road traffic can add time. Night traffic on this forest highway is restricted, so we plan to cross it in daylight. If the Bandipur forest is what you want most, see the Bandipur and Ooty 3-day trip. You then head to Chembra Peak and end the day at Pookode Lake. The Chembra trek is best started in the morning, so if you reach late, your driver may move it to the Day 2 or Day 3 morning, or swap in another stop.

  2. Day 2: Edakkal Caves, Soochipara Waterfalls, Banasura Sagar Dam, Kuruva Island

    The full sightseeing day covers ground: Edakkal is in the south, Soochipara near Meppadi, Banasura in the west and Kuruva in the north. Start early, or tell us which stop to drop.

  3. Day 3: Muthanga, Chain Tree and back to Coimbatore

    You visit the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary at Muthanga, then the Chain Tree near Lakkidi, and drive back to Coimbatore.

How far and how to reach

You reach Wayanad from Coimbatore by road only. The Gundlupet and Bandipur route on Day 1 is longer than the Ooty and Gudalur road but gives you the forest drive. Wayanad has no railway station or airport of its own.

Places you will see

Chembra Peak. It is near Meppadi, about 20 km from Kalpetta and about 13 km from Meppadi bus stand, according to Kerala Tourism's Chembra trek guide. At 2,100 metres it is the highest point in Wayanad district, and the trek passes the Chembra Peak heart lake, shaped like a heart and called Hridaya Saras locally. From Sulthan Bathery to Chembra Peak is about 40 km, roughly an hour to an hour and a half's drive.

Edakkal Caves, Banasura and Kuruva. Kerala Tourism's Wayanad attractions guide lists the caves' prehistoric rock engravings and Banasura Sagar Dam. The dam sits at the foot of Banasura peak. Kuruva Island is about 17 km from Mananthavady on the Kabani river, per the Wayanad lakes and islands page. Entry to Kuruva depends on the forest department on the day; if it is closed, we swap in another stop nearby.

Muthanga. Part of Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, home to elephants, tigers and panthers, as the Wayanad district tourism page notes. The forest department runs the safari and seats are limited; we help you book them when available. Safari timings and prices change by season, so we check them for your travel date.

Best time to go

Kerala Tourism says the Chembra trekking season runs from October to March. That is also the driest time for the Bandipur road. The monsoon months make Soochipara and the other falls fuller, but treks and some sights may close. Entry to Chembra and Soochipara can be restricted after heavy rain or by the authorities, so we check on the day and swap in another stop if needed.

What is the Chembra Peak trekking distance and how hard is it?

Kerala Tourism rates it a moderate trek of 3 to 4 hours in good conditions. Wear proper shoes and carry water. Anyone with knee trouble can wait at the base.

How do we book the Chembra trek?

Chembra Peak trekking booking runs through the forest department, which sets a daily limit, and guides are compulsory. Tickets may be online or at the counter near Meppadi. We plan your morning so you reach the counter early.

How do we get to Chembra Peak from the hotel?

You do not need to work out how to reach Chembra Peak. Your driver takes you to the trek starting point through Meppadi, and waits for you while you are trekking Chembra Peak. This transfer is part of the plan at no extra cost.

Can we do Wayanad in 2 days?

A Wayanad itinerary for 2 days works on this plan, which has two full days in Wayanad between the drives, so it fits with the travel time added. If you only have a weekend, ask us and we will tell you which stops fit.

What if the Muthanga safari or Chembra trek is full?

Both are run by the forest department and sell out. If seats are gone, your driver adds other stops such as Lakkidi.

How do payment and cancellation work?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.

Who should pick a different package?
