Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Mysore via Bandipur, palace and Chamundi Hill

We leave Coimbatore early and take the hill road through Bandipur National Park, which lies on the Mysore to Ooty highway. There is no safari on this plan; you see the forest from the road. The drive takes around 5 to 6 hours with stops. The highway through the forest is closed to traffic at night, so we time the day to cross it in daylight.

After lunch and hotel check-in, you visit Mysore Palace (open until 5:30 PM, per Karnataka Tourism's Mysuru guide). In the late afternoon the driver takes you up Chamundi Hill to the Chamundeshwari Temple and the large granite Nandi halfway up. The palace is lit with nearly 100,000 bulbs on Sundays and holidays, so if the illumination matters to you, book Day 1 on a Sunday or public holiday. The illumination time is set by the palace, so we check it for your date.

  2. Day 2: Church, zoo, Sand Sculpture Museum and Brindavan, return to Coimbatore

Start at St. Philomena's Cathedral, then Mysore Zoo and the Sand Sculpture Museum. In the afternoon we drive to Brindavan Gardens below the KRS dam, then head back to Coimbatore.

How far is Mysore from Coimbatore by road

Mysore is about 200 km from Coimbatore on the shorter Sathyamangalam route, and longer on the Ooty and Bandipur route this package uses. If you would rather skip the ghat road, ask for the Sathyamangalam route; you lose the forest stretch but save time. If a single day is enough, see our one-day Mysore option.

Places you will see

The Mysore church most people ask about after the palace is St. Philomena's Cathedral, also called St. Philomena's Church. Karnataka Tourism's St. Philomena's Cathedral page says the foundation of the present building was laid in October 1933 on the site of an 1843 church, and that the Gothic design draws on Cologne Cathedral. The same page calls it one of the tallest churches in Asia. The cathedral is a short drive from the palace through the city centre.

Mysore Zoo (Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens) is open 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM and closed on Tuesdays, per the official Mysuru Zoo site. If your Day 2 falls on a Tuesday, we swap the zoo for Karanji Lake Mysore or a longer stop elsewhere.

The Sand Sculpture Museum has about 150 sculptures and is open 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM. Brindavan Gardens, the Krishnarajasagar dam gardens, where families spend whole evenings, is about 21 km from the city; its musical fountain runs from 6:30 PM. Staying for it means reaching Coimbatore late at night, so tell us whether you want the fountain or an earlier drive home.

Best time to go

October to February is the most comfortable time. During Dasara (September or October) hotels fill up and rates rise, so book early. The monsoon months still work, since most city sights are indoors or short walks.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Mysore Palace timings and ticket price?

Karnataka Tourism lists the palace as open 10 AM to 5:30 PM daily. Tickets are bought at the gate and are not part of the package price. Ticket prices change, so check the current rate at the gate.

Is St. Philomena's Cathedral worth the stop?

It is St. Philomena's Cathedral, often called St. Philomena's Church, the famous church in Mysore that most visitors include. Allow 30 to 45 minutes and dress modestly.

Is there an entry fee for St. Philomena's Cathedral?

Entry and camera rules are set by the church, so check them on the day. Any fee is paid at the church and is not included in our quote.

Can we change the plan or add Srirangapatna?

Yes, if you tell us before booking. Long detours may change the price. The Ranganathaswamy Temple, Srirangapatna and Tipu's Mysore summer palace (Daria Daulat) are about 15 km from Mysore and fit on Day 2 if you drop the zoo. Devaraja Market is in the city centre, a good evening walk on Day 1.

What are the payment and cancellation terms?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.

Who is this trip not for?

If you want a wildlife safari, choose our Kabini and Mysore wildlife trip. If you want a slower pace with children, the 3-day Mysore family holiday gives you an extra night. For hills and forest instead, there is our 2-day BR Hills trip. Or try the 3-day Shimoga and Jog Falls trip. You can also browse every Mysore trip we run or our wider Karnataka packages.
