Wayanad is about 215 km from Coimbatore by road, roughly 4.5 hours of driving to Kalpetta. The usual route runs through Mettupalayam, Ooty, Gudalur and Sultan Bathery. The district has no railway line, so a private vehicle is the easiest way in from Coimbatore.

The Wayanad district tourism page lists Kalpetta as the base for distances: Gudalur 70 km, Ooty 125 km, Mysore 150 km and Kochi 250 km. What to see in Wayanad

Most wayanad packages are built around three stops: Chembra Peak, the Edakkal Caves and Banasura Sagar Dam. All three fit into a 3 day trip. Smaller stops such as Pookode Lake, Soochipara Waterfalls, Kuruva Island and Muthanga fill the gaps.

• Chembra Peak. At about 2,100 m, it is reached on foot from Meppadi. The trail passes a heart-shaped lake that people search for as "heart lake wayanad". Access is controlled by the South Wayanad Forest Development Agency, and the District Tourism Promotion Council provides guides and trekking equipment for a fee. Start in the morning.
• Edakkal Caves. The Wayanad district page puts them at about 1,200 ft above sea level and says the engravings include human figures, animals, tools and scripts, the oldest dating to around 6000 BC. The climb is steep in places, so reach the ticket counter when it opens.
• Banasura Sagar Dam. Built in 1979 across a tributary of the Kabani, it is described by the district as the largest earthen dam in India and has boating. It is 21 km from Kalpetta.
• Lakkidi View Point and Pookode Lake. Lakkidi is at the top of the ghat road. Pookode has boats. Both suit the first afternoon.
• Soochipara Waterfalls, Kuruva Island, Muthanga and the Chain Tree. The full sightseeing day is long, because Edakkal is in the south, Soochipara near Meppadi, Banasura in the west and Kuruva in the north. Tell us which stop to drop if you prefer a slower day.
