How to reach Munnar from Coimbatore

Munnar is about 155 km from Coimbatore by road, roughly 4.5 hours with the hill section. The Idukki district website gives about 160 km and up to 4 hours; we plan for 4.5 so you can stop for tea and photos. We collect you in Coimbatore and drive the whole way in our own AC vehicle.

The town sits at about 1,600 m in Idukki district, where three streams meet: Muthirapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala. The name means "three rivers" in Malayalam, according to Kerala Tourism. The nearest airport, Cochin, is about 108 km away, though your trip starts and ends in Coimbatore.

The same driver stays with you for the whole trip, and the Kerala permit and entry tax are already in the price.

What a Munnar tour covers

  • Tea and the Tea Museum. European planters started the tea estates in the 19th century, and A. H. Sharp planted about 50 acres in 1880. The Tata Tea museum at Nallathanni Estate shows photographs and machinery from that period.
  • Mattupetty. About 13 km from Munnar town, at roughly 1,700 m, with a dam, a lake with boating and a dairy farm run under the Indo-Swiss Livestock Project.
  • Eravikulam National Park. It covers 97 sq km and protects the endangered Nilgiri tahr. Anamudi, 2,695 m, is the highest peak in South India and lies inside the park. Only the Rajamalai section is open to visitors.
  • Top Station. About 32 km from Munnar, the highest point on the Munnar to Kodaikanal road, with views into Tamil Nadu.
  • Anayirangal. About 22 km from Munnar, a dam surrounded by tea estates and evergreen forest.
  • Pallivasal and Chinnakanal. Pallivasal was the site of Kerala's first hydro-electric project. The Chinnakanal (Power House) waterfalls are near the town.

Distances are from the Idukki district tourism page. Entry tickets and boating fees change, so we do not list them here.

How much does a Munnar tour package from Coimbatore cost?

Our Munnar tour packages start at ₹5,999 per person for 2 days and 1 night, ₹7,499 for 3 days and ₹13,100 for the 4-day honeymoon, based on 2 travelling together. One price covers the AC vehicle, driver, fuel, toll, parking and the hotel. Meals and entry tickets are extra.

The price moves with a few things. A longer trip means more hotel nights and more kilometres. A package that adds Thekkady or Alleppey adds driving time and a second or third hotel. Peak holiday dates cost more than weekdays, and a bigger group splits the vehicle cost across more people. Several packages above show a price range instead of one number: your quote fixes the exact figure for your dates and group size.

Hotels are 3-star or similar and named in the quote before you pay. The longer Munnar Thekkady Alleppey 6 days package costs more mainly because it adds two more hotel nights and a lot more driving.

Which are the best Munnar tour packages for your group?

The best Munnar tour packages depend on days and who is travelling. Couples usually pick the honeymoon plan, families the 3 day plan, and groups who want wildlife the Thekkady plan. Best time to visit Munnar

Munnar is pleasant from October to May. June to August is the heavy southwest monsoon, when the hills are green but rain and fog slow the driving. For clear views and easy driving, most visitors go between December and March, or in April and May to escape the plains' heat.

Months What to expect
June to August Heavy monsoon rain. Waterfalls are full, views are often covered in cloud. Pick this only if you like rain and low prices.
September to November Rain eases through the northeast monsoon. Green hills and fewer visitors.
December to February The coolest and clearest months, and the busiest around Christmas and New Year. Book early.
February to March Eravikulam National Park closes to visitors for the Nilgiri tahr calving season, per Kerala Tourism.
April to May Hot on the plains, comfortable in the hills. Popular with families on school holidays.

The neelakurinji, a plant that flowers once every twelve years and turns the hills blue, last bloomed in 2018. Kerala Tourism lists the next bloom for 2030. Until then, the usual attractions are the tea slopes, mist and the tahr at Eravikulam.

Combine Munnar with other places

Munnar pairs well with the rest of Kerala and with Tamil Nadu hill towns. Thekkady is the usual next stop for spice plantations and the Periyar lake. Alleppey adds a backwater night, Wayanad a different kind of hill country, and Kodaikanal links Munnar to a Tamil Nadu circuit.
