Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Munnar, local sights

    We pick you up in Coimbatore and drive to Munnar by the Pollachi and Udumalpet road, about 160 km. After check-in you see the sights close to town and the tea gardens around it.

  2. Day 2: Full day of Munnar sightseeing

    A full day for Munnar. Most families pick Eravikulam National Park, Mattupetty Dam and Echo Point. Your driver may change the order on the day to beat crowds or weather.

  3. Day 3: Munnar to Wayanad via the Calicut route, Pookode Lake

    This is the long day. You leave Munnar early and drive down to the coast and north past Kozhikode (Calicut), then climb the Thamarassery ghat into Wayanad. It is the longest drive of the trip, so expect most of the day in the vehicle. If you arrive in time, you stop at Pookode Lake near Vythiri for a boat ride before the hotel.

  4. Day 4: Banasura Sagar Dam, Edakkal Caves, Lakkidi and back to Coimbatore

    Your morning to explore Wayanad. You see Banasura Sagar Dam at the foot of the Banasura hills, then Edakkal Caves, and stop at Lakkidi View Point at the top of the ghat on the way out. Then the drive back to Coimbatore. Arrival in Coimbatore depends on traffic and how long you spend at each stop.

How far / how to reach

Coimbatore to Munnar is about 160 km. Munnar to Wayanad is the longest leg and fills most of Day 3, and Wayanad to Coimbatore is another full drive, all in one vehicle with the same driver.

Places you will see

Edakkal Caves. The caves hold prehistoric rock engravings. Kerala Tourism's guide to Wayanad's main attractions puts them, with Banasura Sagar Dam and Pookode Lake, among the district's main sights. The climb to the upper cave is steep. Opening days and timings change, so we check them for your date.

Pookode Lake. A freshwater lake about 3 km from Vythiri with pedal and row boats, per the Wayanad lakes and islands page on Kerala Tourism.

Banasura Sagar Dam. DTPC Wayanad's Banasura page describes the dam as the largest earth dam in India, at the foot of a 6,800 ft hill.

Best time to go

October to May suits this trip best, since the long Day 3 drive is drier. Eravikulam is closed from February to March for the Nilgiri tahr calving season, per Kerala Tourism. June to September is the monsoon in both districts.

Frequently asked questions

Does the plan include the Banasura hill trek?

No. The trek needs a forest department permit and starts early: DTPC Wayanad lists entry from 7.30 am to 11 am with a limited number of trekkers per day. That takes your whole Day 4 morning. If you want to do the trek, ask us to add a second Wayanad night.

How much is the Banasura hill trek?

DTPC Wayanad sets the Banasura trek fee as a group rate with lower student rates, and bookings are made only at the counter. The fee is paid there, can change, and is not in our price.

Can we see the heart-shaped lake on this trip?

Not on this plan. Chembra Lake, the heart shaped lake in Wayanad, sits on the Chembra trek, which needs a morning and a forest pass. It is locally called the heart lake. If the Chembra trek matters to you, our Wayanad 3 days trip includes Chembra Peak.

Is there a train from Coimbatore to Wayanad?

Wayanad has no railway station. Trains from Coimbatore run to Kozhikode, and you would still need a road transfer up the ghat. Check current timings on the Indian Railways site before you book. This package goes by road all the way.

Is Day 3 too long for children or older travellers?

It is a long day in the vehicle, with breaks for food and rest. If anyone gets car-sick on ghat roads, a single-district trip such as our 3-day Munnar package is gentler. How do payment and cancellation work?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.
