How far is Thrissur from Coimbatore?

Thrissur is about 115 km from Coimbatore by road, roughly 2.5 hours through Palakkad. It is the closest big Kerala temple town to Coimbatore, which is why our Thrissur stops fit into short 2 and 3 day trips. Thrissur railway station is about 4 km from the town centre, and the district page puts Cochin International Airport 58 km away.

In our current plans Thrissur is a sightseeing stop, not an overnight base. You sleep in Guruvayur, 29 km to the north west, or near Athirapally, and visit the Thrissur temples on the way. If you would rather spend a night in Thrissur, tell us and we will price it.

Which Thrissur tour package from Coimbatore should you pick?

Three packages include Thrissur. For a temple weekend, the Guruvayur Thrissur 2 day package has Guruvayur darshan on Day 1 and Vadakkunnathan and Paramekkavu temples on Day 2. For waterfalls, the Athirapally Thrissur 2 day plan stops at Vadakkunnathan on the drive home.

Package Length From (per person)
Guruvayur Thrissur Tour Package from Coimbatore (2 Days) 2 Days / 1 Night ₹5,499
Athirapally Thrissur 2 Days Tour Package from Coimbatore 2 Days / 1 Night ₹5,999
Guruvayur Athirapally tour package: 3 days from Coimbatore 3 Days / 2 Nights ₹8,800

The 3 day Guruvayur Athirapally plan joins both: Guruvayur first, then a Thrissur temple (usually Vadakkunnathan) on Day 2, and a night near the falls.

What does a Thrissur trip cost?

Packages that include Thrissur start at ₹5,499 per person, based on 2 travelling together. One price covers the AC vehicle, driver, fuel, toll, parking, the Kerala permit and entry tax, and a 3-star or similar hotel. Meals, entry tickets and personal expenses are extra. The rate per person falls as the group grows, and we can send a Tempo Traveller for family groups.

What to see in Thrissur

The town grew around Vadakkunnathan Temple, a Shiva temple on a hillock in the middle of the city. The Thrissur district page says the name Thrissur comes from this temple. Kerala Tourism describes it as one of the oldest temples in the state, set in nine walled acres. Its restoration, done under the Archaeological Survey of India, won a UNESCO Asia-Pacific award for heritage conservation.

  • Vadakkunnathan Temple, with a tower on each of its four sides, a koothambalam (temple theatre) and murals of scenes from the Mahabharata.
  • Paramekkavu Bhagavathi Temple, close to Vadakkunnathan and one of the two main temples in the Thrissur Pooram procession.
  • Sakthan Thampuran Palace, rebuilt in a Kerala and Dutch style in 1795 by a ruler of Cochin and run as a museum since 2005.

Temple dress rules and entry rules are set by each temple and can change. We tell you what applies before the day.

When is Thrissur Pooram?

Thrissur Pooram is held on the open ground around Vadakkunnathan Temple, on the Pooram day of the Malayalam month of Medam, which falls in April or May. Kerala Tourism describes the parade of decorated elephants and the fireworks, which draw lakhs of people every year. The town is very crowded on that day, so plan around it unless the festival is the reason you are going. The date changes every year; send us yours and we will check.

When is the best time to visit Thrissur?

October to February is the most comfortable window. March to May is the hottest stretch, with daytime highs that can reach 36 to 38 °C. The southwest monsoon runs from June to September and brings heavy rain, though that is also when Athirapally falls are at their fullest.

What can you combine with Thrissur?

Thrissur sits between Palakkad and Kochi, so it pairs with places on both sides. Guruvayur is 29 km away and Athirapally about 63 km, according to Kerala Tourism. Palakkad is on the way from Coimbatore, and Cochin is further south. See all our Kerala tour packages, or call or WhatsApp +91 86101 62373 from our office in Ganapathy, Coimbatore.
