How far is Bekal from Coimbatore?

Bekal is about 340 km from Coimbatore by road, roughly 7.5 hours of driving with stops. Our plans break the trip in Wayanad on the way up, and the drive from Wayanad down to Bekal is about 185 km, around 4 to 5 hours. The way back is the long day: Bekal to Coimbatore is about 345 km, 7 to 8 hours with stops, so expect to reach home in the evening or later. If that is too much for your group, we can add a night in Kannur or Kozhikode on the way.

Every trip starts and ends in Coimbatore, with pickup from your home, hotel, the airport, railway station or bus stand.

Which Bekal tour package from Coimbatore should you pick?

Both of our Bekal plans spend two nights in Wayanad and one night at Bekal. The difference is what comes around the fort. On the Wayanad Bekal 4 day package you reach Bekal on Day 3 in time to walk the fort walls at sunset, spend the evening at Bekal Beach Park, and stop at Ananthapura Lake Temple the next morning before driving home. The Wayanad Kannur Bekal 5 day plan adds a night in Kannur first, then gives Day 4 to the fort and the backwaters and starts Day 5 with a boat cruise at Nileshwaram.

Package Length From (per person)
Wayanad Bekal 4 Days Tour Package from Coimbatore 4 Days / 3 Nights ₹11,999
Wayanad Kannur Bekal Tour Package from Coimbatore (5 Days) 5 Days / 4 Nights ₹14,999

Pick the 4 day plan for the fort and the lake temple in the shortest trip. Pick the 5 day plan if you also want the drive-in beach at Kannur and a morning on the water.

What does a Bekal package cost?

Bekal packages start at ₹11,999 per person for the 4 day plan, based on 2 travelling together. One price covers the AC vehicle, driver, fuel, toll, parking, the Kerala permit and entry tax, and a 3-star or similar hotel at Bekal named in your quote. Meals, entry tickets, the cruise fee and personal expenses are extra. Larger groups can travel in a Tempo Traveller, which lowers the per person rate.

What is special about Bekal Fort?

The Kasaragod district page calls Bekal Fort the largest fort in Kerala, spread over 40 acres at Pallikere village, about 12 km from Kasaragod. Kerala Tourism says Shivappa Nayaka of the Keladi Nayaka dynasty built it in the mid-17th century to guard the coast and the spice trade. It later passed to Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, and the British East India Company took it in the late 18th century. From above, the fort has a keyhole shape, and Bekal Beach lies right next to it. The fort charges an entry fee, and Kerala Tourism advises checking timings before you go, so we confirm both for your date.

What else is there on the Kasaragod coast?

  • Ananthapura Lake Temple. Kerala Tourism dates it to the 9th century and calls it the only lake temple in Kerala, about 30 km from Bekal. It is believed to be the original seat of the deity of Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram. It is on the 4 day plan.
  • Valiyaparamba backwaters. The district describes Valiyaparamba as an island fishing village in the Tejaswini river, with the backwater on one side and the Arabian Sea on the other, about 30 km from Bekal. Cruises run in traditional kettuvallam houseboats. The 5 day plan's Nileshwaram cruise goes around these waters.
  • Ranipuram. A small hill station about 48 km east of Kanhangad and 780 m above sea level, known for trekking, according to the district. Ranipuram is not on our fixed plans. If you want the Ranipuram peak trek, ask when you book and we tell you what it changes in the days.
  • Theyyam. The ritual art of North Kerala is performed in Kasaragod too. The district notes that north of the Payangadi river it is often called Kaliyattam. Dates change every year, so it is never fixed in a plan; our Kannur page explains how we check.

When is the best time to visit Bekal?

Kerala Tourism suggests October to March, when the weather is cool enough for walking the fort. June to September is the monsoon, with heavy rain that can upset travel plans and makes the sea rough. The backwater cruise and the sunset at the fort are both easier in the dry months.

What can you combine with Bekal?

Both Bekal plans begin in the hills, so see our Wayanad tour packages for what the first two days cover. Kannur is about 75 km south, around 2 hours, and adds a drive-in beach and a Portuguese fort. Mangalore is about 65 km north of the fort, according to the district page; our Mangalore tour packages run as a separate trip. For more of the state, browse every Kerala package from Coimbatore.
