Kannur tour packages

How far is Kannur from Coimbatore?

Kannur is about 270 km from Coimbatore by road, roughly 6 hours of driving with stops. Our plans do not go there in one push. They climb to Wayanad first and come down the ghat to the coast later, and the Kalpetta to Kannur leg is about 120 km, close to 3 hours. That splits the road into two easier days and puts the hills on the way.

Every trip starts and ends in Coimbatore, with pickup from your home, hotel, the airport, railway station or bus stand. The same AC vehicle and driver stay with you for the whole trip.

Which Kannur tour package from Coimbatore should you pick?

Two of our packages reach Kannur, but only one stays there. The 5 day Wayanad Kannur Bekal plan gives Kannur a full afternoon and a night: on Day 3 you come down from Wayanad to Muzhappilangad beach and St. Angelo Fort, and on Day 4 you drive north to Bekal. The Wayanad Bekal 4 day package only passes through Kannur on the drive home, though a stop at the Raja Rajeswara Temple in Taliparamba can be added that day.

Package Length From (per person)
Wayanad Kannur Bekal Tour Package from Coimbatore (5 Days) 5 Days / 4 Nights ₹14,999
Wayanad Bekal 4 Days Tour Package from Coimbatore 4 Days / 3 Nights ₹11,999

If Kannur is the reason you are going, take the 5 day plan. The 4 day plan suits people who mainly want Wayanad and Bekal Fort and are fine with a very long last day.

What does a Kannur package cost?

The 5 day plan with a Kannur night starts at ₹14,999 per person, based on 2 travelling together. One price covers the AC vehicle, driver, fuel, toll, parking, the Kerala permit and entry tax, and a 3-star or similar hotel named in your quote. Meals, entry tickets and personal expenses are extra. The per person rate drops when more people share the vehicle, and groups of 10 or more can travel in a Tempo Traveller.

What to see in Kannur

Kerala Tourism describes Kannur's coastline as dotted with beaches such as Payyambalam and Muzhappilangad. Our Kannur day is built around the drive-in beach and the Portuguese fort.

  • Muzhappilangad Drive-in Beach. The Kannur district page calls it Kerala's only drive-in beach, a 4 km stretch of sand about 7 km from Thalassery. It also says black rocks keep deep currents away from the shore. Our driver takes the vehicle onto the sand only when local authorities allow it and the sand is firm. If driving is stopped, you walk the beach instead.
  • St. Angelo Fort (Kannur Fort). Built in 1505 by Don Francisco de Almeida, the first Portuguese Viceroy in India, according to the district. It is about 2 km from the Thavakkara bus stand in Kannur town, so it fits easily after the beach.
  • Payyambalam Beach. A quiet, well kept beach close to town, about 2.7 km from Kannur railway station. It is not on the fixed plan, but it is close enough for an evening walk if you ask.
  • Raja Rajeswara Temple, Taliparamba. A stop on the 4 day plan's drive south. Darshan timings and entry rules are set by the temple and can change, so we check them for your date.

Can you see Theyyam in Kannur?

Possibly, but we cannot promise it. Kerala Tourism calls Kannur the land of Theyyams, a ritual art performed at temples and village shrines rather than on a stage. Its Theyyam calendar page says the season generally runs from November to May, and that dates follow the Malayalam calendar, so they move every year. Our packages do not include a performance. If your trip falls in the season, tell us when you book. We look at the published calendar and temple notices and tell you whether a performance near your route fits the plan. Visitors watch from the side; the rituals themselves belong to the performers and the local community.

Kannur handloom: can you visit a weaving centre?

Kerala Tourism calls Kannur the land of looms and lores. The Kanhirode Weavers Cooperative Society, about 13 km east of Kannur city on the Kannur to Mattannur road, started in 1952 and makes cotton and silk fabrics, bedsheets, shirts and sarees. Kerala Tourism says visitors can watch the weaving there. It is not part of the fixed plan, so ask when you book and we will tell you what it changes in the day.

When is the best time to visit Kannur?

October to March suits most trips. The coast is dry, the sea is calm enough for the beach, and Wayanad is cool on the way in. From June to September the monsoon brings heavy rain, which can stop the beach drive and slow the ghat roads. Winter also falls inside the Theyyam season, which helps if you hope to see one.

What can you combine with Kannur?

Every Kannur plan starts in the hills, so read our Wayanad tour packages page for the first two days. Bekal is about 75 km north, around 2 hours, and has its own page for the fort and the Kasaragod backwaters. For the rest of the state, browse every Kerala tour package from Coimbatore.
