Coimbatore to Mahabalipuram distance

Mahabalipuram is about 460 km from Coimbatore, roughly 8 hours by road with stops. It is one of the longest drives on our list, so most Coimbatore visitors see it as the last stop of a longer east coast route, not a one-day trip. Our 5-day tour reaches it on day 4 and drives home on day 5.

The town is also called Mamallapuram. Kanchipuram to Mahabalipuram is about 66 km by road, roughly an hour, and Mahabalipuram to Kanchipuram is the same drive back. It is on the coast in Chengalpattu district. The district website lists Chennai airport 52 km away and the Chennai railhead 60 km away, with Chengalpattu railway station 22 km from the town.

The Chennai to Mahabalipuram 2-day package is for visitors who are already in Chennai, since the drive is about 60 km. It includes the AC vehicle and driver, pickup and drop in Chennai, the hotel, fuel, toll and parking.

The 5-day Thanjavur Pondicherry Mahabalipuram package is the Coimbatore option. It shows the Big Temple in Thanjavur, two nights in Pondicherry and a night in Mahabalipuram, with a price of ₹23,000 to ₹28,000 per person.

Places to visit in Mahabalipuram in 1 day

You can see the main Mahabalipuram sights in one day: the Pancha Rathas, Arjuna's Penance, the Krishna Mandapa and the Shore Temple. They are close together, so sightseeing in Mahabalipuram is mostly short walks between monuments, and a Mahabalipuram itinerary for the day can simply follow the list below. A second morning on the beach makes the stay easier.

• Shore Temple. A structural temple on the coast, floodlit at night. The Chengalpattu district page calls it "perhaps the most photographed monument in India after Taj Mahal".
• Pancha Rathas. Five monolithic chariot-shaped temples near the beach, dated to the 7th century. The popular name refers to the Pandavas, but they are dedicated to Shaivite, Vaishnavite and Shakta deities.
• Arjuna's Penance. Also called the Descent of the Ganges, one of the largest open-air rock reliefs in the world.
• Krishna Mandapa. A cave temple near Arjuna's Penance with panels that include Krishna lifting Mount Govardhana.
• Rock-cut caves. The district website counts nine rock-cut cave temples in the town.

The monuments were built by the Pallava dynasty in the 7th and 8th centuries. UNESCO inscribed the Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram in 1984, and the Archaeological Survey of India manages the site. Ticket prices and timings change, so we check them for your date.

Best time to visit Mahabalipuram

January to March is the best time for Mahabalipuram: the northeast monsoon rains of October to December have passed and the heat has not yet built. April to June is hot, so plan monuments for early morning and late afternoon. Expect heavy rain on the coast from October to December.
