What are the best tourist places in Vellore?

The best places to visit in Vellore are the fort with its temple and museum, the Sripuram Golden Temple and, if you have time, the hills around the city. Vellore tourist places are close enough together that the fort and the Golden Temple fit into one day, with the zoo or the hills as extras.

• Vellore Fort. Built probably in the 16th century, with Chinna Bommi Nayak named in some accounts. It is a Monument of National Importance managed by the Archaeological Survey of India and is considered a good example of Tamil Nadu military architecture. Its moat is fed by pipes from the Suryagunta reservoir.
• Jalakandeswarar Temple. A Shiva temple inside the fort, also from the 16th century, known for Vijayanagara style carving and its gopuram. It is the answer to the common vellore temple search.
• Fort museum and Tipu Mahal. The State Government Museum inside the fort opened in 1985. The Tipu Mahal is where Tipu Sultan's family was held.
• Sripuram Golden Temple. The district website says the temple complex covers 100 acres and was built by a Vellore based charitable trust.
• Amirthi Zoological Park. About 25 km south of Vellore, in forest area.

The district website adds that Vellore was the seat of the Pallava, Chola, Nayak, Maratha, Arcot Nawab and Bijapur rulers, that the fort was regarded as one of the strongest in the Carnatic Wars, and that the 1806 Vellore mutiny is part of the district's history. Its tourist list also includes Muthu Mandapam, the Government Museum, the Somanathar and Arinjaya Choleeshwaram temples at Melpadi, and a Jain cave at Vallimalai; the Melpadi and Vallimalai places are outside the city, so we add them only if you ask. The Christian Medical College and Hospital, founded in 1900 by Dr. Ida S. Scudder, is the city's best known institution, though it is a hospital rather than a sight.
