How far is Kolli Hills from Coimbatore?

The Coimbatore to Kolli Hills distance is about 220 km by road, around 4.5 hours of driving with a break. The route runs east into Namakkal district, and the last stretch is a ghat road with a long run of hairpin bends up to the plateau. The Namakkal district page on Kolli Hills lists three roads up: from Namakkal via Sendamangalam, from Rasipuram via Kalappanaickenpatti, and from Salem via Mettala and Mullukurichi.

What is Kolli Hills known for?

Kolli Hills, or Kollimalai, is a range of the Eastern Ghats in Namakkal district. The district administration puts it at about 1,200 m and 45 km from Namakkal town, and says the slopes are known for the medicinal herbs and plants that grow there. Pepper, jackfruit, pineapple, oranges and tapioca are farmed on the hills, according to Wikipedia.

The hills also turn up in old Tamil poetry. Wikipedia says Valvil Ori, a chieftain praised in Sangam poems, ruled the area around 200 CE. The district page adds that the Valvil Ori festival is held here every year in August. Kolli Hills is much quieter than Yercaud or Ooty: farm roads, temples and viewpoints rather than a busy town centre.

What are the places to visit in Kolli Hills?

• Arapaleeswarar Temple. A Shiva temple that Wikipedia links to the rule of Valvil Ori. It is also the starting point for the walk to the falls.
• Agaya Gangai Waterfalls. Near the temple, reached by a long flight of steps down into the valley. The climb back up takes real effort, and the path can close after heavy rain.
• Ettukai Amman Temple. The shrine of Kollipavai, the goddess who, in local belief, guards the hills.
• Periyaswamy Temple. Another hill shrine on the district list.
• Boat house. A boating spot for an easy hour after the temples.
• Horticulture Farm and Herbal Farm. Farms with the fruit trees and medicinal plants the hills are known for.
• View Point and Telescope House. Lookouts over the plains below the hills.

One night on the hill is enough for the temple, Agaya Gangai and a viewpoint. A day trip from Coimbatore means about 9 hours in the vehicle, which leaves little time on the hill and little energy for the steps. That is why our trip stays the night and adds Yercaud, so each long drive covers two hill stations.

The Valvil Ori festival in August brings crowds to the hill, and in a dry summer the falls run thin.

Who should pick a different hill?

Kolli Hills is a poor fit for anyone who gets car sick easily or cannot manage steep steps, since the bends and the climb from the falls are part of the trip.
