How do I get from Coimbatore to Madurai?

Madurai is about 210 km from Coimbatore by road, roughly 4.5 hours in a car with a few stops. Our driver picks you up at your Coimbatore address, so you skip the bus stand and train timings. The same vehicle then takes you to the temples and back home.

Most people want to see more than one town, so the road to Madurai often continues. Rameswaram, Kanyakumari, Kodaikanal and Thanjavur all connect from here by road, and our packages are built around those links.

How many days do I need for Madurai?

Two days is enough for Madurai alone: the Meenakshi Amman Temple and the other sights in the city on one day, the temples around it on the other. Add two more days if you want Rameswaram, and a week if Kanyakumari is on the list.

If you only have a weekend, the Madurai 2 Days Tour Package covers the city and nearby temples. For the island temple at Rameswaram too, take the Madurai Rameswaram 4 days tour package.

What are the best tourist places in Madurai?

If you searched for Madurai near tourist places, the seven stops below are the usual answer: four are in the city and three are outside it. The city has a handful of places that are on nearly every itinerary, and several more within an hour. Distances below are from the city, and the order we visit them is set with you in the quote.

  • Meenakshi Amman Temple. It sits on the south bank of the Vaigai and has 14 gateway towers between 45 and 50 m tall, plus a southern tower of 51.9 m. The present structure was built between 1623 and 1655. It draws about 15,000 visitors a day and around 25,000 on Fridays, so we plan the visit at quieter hours.
  • Thirumalai Nayak Palace. Built in 1636 by Thirumalai Nayakar in the Indo-Saracenic style, about 1.5 km from the Meenakshi temple and maintained by the Tamil Nadu Archaeological Department.
  • Gandhi Memorial Museum. One of five Gandhi Sangrahalayas in India, housed in the renovated palace of Rani Mangamma.
  • Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam. A square tank of almost 16 acres, where the float festival is held in January or February.
  • Thiruparankundram. About 8 km from the city and the first of the six abodes of Murugan.
  • Alagar Kovil. A Vishnu temple about 21 km north-east of Madurai at the foot of Solaimalai, and one of the 108 Divya Desams.
  • Pazhamudircholai. A Murugan temple on top of Solaimalai and another of the six abodes. It is the most searched temple name connected with Madurai, and it sits on the same road as Alagar Kovil, so the two fit into one half day.

What does a Madurai tour package from Coimbatore cost?

Prices start at ₹6,200 per person for the 2 day trip and rise with the number of days and the places added. One price covers the AC vehicle, driver, fuel, toll, parking and a 3-star hotel. Meals, entry tickets and personal expenses are extra.

Package Length From (per person)
Madurai 2 Days Tour Package 2 Days / 1 Night ₹6,200
Madurai Rameswaram Temple Tour Package 4 Days / 3 Nights ₹10,500
Madurai Rameswaram Thanjavur Trichy Tour Package 5 Days / 4 Nights ₹13,800
Madurai Rameswaram Kanyakumari Trivandrum Tour Package 6 Days / 5 Nights ₹17,500
Madurai Rameswaram 4 days tour package 4 days, 3 nights ₹17,500
Arupadai Veedu Tour Package 6 Days / 5 Nights ₹24,500

The price moves with the hotel category, the vehicle size and the season. A trip in a festival week costs more because rooms in the temple area fill up. Send us your dates and group size on WhatsApp at +91 86101 62373 and we will confirm the hotel in the quote.

Which Murugan temples can I add to a Madurai trip?

Madurai holds two of the six abodes of Murugan: Thiruparankundram and Pazhamudircholai. The Arupadai Veedu Tour Package links all six over 6 days from Coimbatore, which is hard to do by public transport.

If you want only the two Madurai abodes, they fit into the 2 day Madurai trip. Tell us when booking and we will place them on day two.

Can I combine Madurai with Kodaikanal, Rameswaram or Kanyakumari?

Yes. Madurai is the base for several of our longer routes. The Madurai Rameswaram Kanyakumari 7 Days Tour Package covers the south coast, while the Madurai Kanyakumari Kodaikanal Ooty package adds two hill stations on the way back to Coimbatore.

See the Rameswaram, Kanyakumari, Kodaikanal and Thanjavur pages for what each stop adds. For a wider route, the Tamil Nadu tour packages page lists the long circuits.

When is the best time to visit Madurai?

January to March is the comfortable window for temple and palace visits. April and May are the hot months on the plains, and the north-east monsoon brings rain between October and December. The Teppakulam float festival falls in January or February, and festival weeks bring crowds and higher hotel rates.

Temple festival days change every year, so we check the calendar for your travel dates before confirming the hotel and the visiting order.

What are the six abodes of Murugan?

The Arupadai Veedu are six Murugan temples in Tamil Nadu: Thiruparankundram and Pazhamudircholai in Madurai district, Tiruchendur on the coast, Palani in Dindigul district, Swamimalai in Thanjavur district and Tiruttani in Thiruvallur district. Thiruparankundram is the first of the six, and tradition places Murugan's marriage to Deivanai there.

Pazhamudircholai stands on a hillock near a stream called Nupura Gangai and shows Murugan with both Deivanai and Valli. Our six day Arupadai Veedu plan visits all six in order, which is why it is priced above the Madurai city trips.
