What is Velankanni and why do people travel there?

Velankanni is a pilgrim town in Nagapattinam district, on the shore of the Bay of Bengal. Its Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health, called Our Lady of Health on the district page, is a Roman Catholic church in Gothic style with white walls and a red tiled roof. A separate shrine nearby shows Our Lady of Sorrows. The Basilica was raised to basilica status in 1962 by Pope John XXIII. People of many faiths visit. If you searched for the Velankanni temple, this is the church they mean, and it is one of the best known pilgrim centres in the south.

The annual festival runs from 29 August to 8 September and ends with the Feast of the Nativity of Mary on 8 September. Crowds in that window are very large, so book hotel and vehicle weeks ahead.

How far is Velankanni from Coimbatore and how do you get there?

Velankanni is about 380 km from Coimbatore, a drive of around 7.5 hours with stops, usually via Trichy and Thanjavur. The nearest airport is Tiruchirappalli, about 150 km away, and the town has its own railway station. Nagapattinam is only a short drive north, and the Nagapattinam district site lists the Basilica, Nagore Dargah and several old temples in the town. Our vehicle and driver stay with you from Coimbatore pickup to drop, so you need no separate taxi from the station.

What does the Velankanni Nagore 3 day package cover?

Our Velankanni Nagore 3 days tour package uses two nights in Velankanni. Day 1 is the drive and the evening mass at the Basilica. Day 2 goes to Nagore Dargah and Nagapattinam, with the late afternoon free for the beach and the shrines near the Basilica. Day 3 is morning prayer and the drive home.

Nagore Dargah, near Nagapattinam, holds the relics of the saint Abdul Kadhar, who died in 1558. The Kandoori festival marks his anniversary and draws visitors from many faiths. Mass times change by day and language, so check the shrine's own schedule before you travel. We time the arrival to match.

What else is there to see around Velankanni and Nagapattinam?

The Basilica draws about 20 million pilgrims a year, according to Wikipedia, and about 3 million come during the 11 day festival. Its Gothic design was later modified by the Portuguese, and it is sometimes called the Lourdes of the East. The district formed in 1991 with Nagapattinam as its headquarters, and its Bay of Bengal beach runs about 188 km. The district site lists the Kayarohanaswamy Neelayathatchi Amman Temple, the Sowriraja Perumal Temple, the Nellukkadai Mariamman Temple, a small museum and a lighthouse in Nagapattinam town. Nagore's dargah is known for its 16th century minaret and for the 14 day Kanduri festival. Our Day 2 fits Nagore and a short stop in Nagapattinam before you return for the evening at the shrine.

Who is this trip for?

It suits families, older travellers and church groups who want two unhurried nights at the shrine and not a rushed overnight. Because we start in Coimbatore, there is no train change and no luggage handling. If you want only one night, ask us when you request the quote, though the drive each way takes most of a day.

How much does a Velankanni tour package cost?

The package starts at ₹11,700 per person. The price depends on your dates, the hotel, the vehicle size and how many travel together. Festival dates in late August and early September are the busiest, so book early. One price covers the AC vehicle, driver, fuel, toll, parking and the hotel, a 3-star or similar stay near the Basilica, confirmed in your quote. Meals, entry tickets and personal expenses are extra.

What is the best time to visit Velankanni?

January to March is the easiest season, with the sea breeze and little rain. October to December is the north-east monsoon on the Tamil Nadu coast, with heavy showers that can delay roads. April and May are hot. September is the busiest month because of the festival. Pick it only if the festival is the reason you are going.

Can you add Thanjavur, Kumbakonam or Madurai?

Yes. The road passes Thanjavur, so the Thanjavur Kumbakonam 3 day package is a natural pairing, and the 5 day Thanjavur Pondicherry Mahabalipuram plan covers the east coast. See also Nagore, Thanjavur and Kumbakonam. Call or WhatsApp +91 86101 62373 to change the plan.
