Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Chennai pickup, Shore Temple, Pancha Rathas, Arjuna's Penance and Krishna's Butter Ball

    We pick you up in Chennai in the morning and drive down the East Coast Road. The Chengalpattu district page on Mamallapuram puts the town about 60 km from Chennai and 52 km from the airport. Start at the Pancha Rathas, then Arjuna's Penance and Krishna's Butter Ball, which sit close together. End the day at the Shore Temple, which the district page notes is flood-lit at night.

  2. Day 2: Mahabalipuram beach, optional Crocodile Bank or Kovalam, and Chennai drop

    A slow morning on Mahabalipuram beach. On the way back you can stop at the Madras Crocodile Bank or at Kovalam (Covelong) beach on the same road. Opening days and hours change, so we check them for your date. Drop in Chennai by afternoon.

How far / how to reach

Mahabalipuram is about 60 km from Chennai by road along the East Coast Road. The nearest railway station is Chengalpattu, 22 km away, per the district page. Our vehicle picks you up and drops you in Chennai, so you do not need to change buses.

Places you will see

Shore Temple. Incredible India's Shore Temple page dates it to the early 8th century under the Pallava king Narasimhavarman II, with shrines to both Shiva and Vishnu. It is part of the UNESCO-listed Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram.

Pancha Rathas. Five monolithic shrines, each carved from a single rock.

Arjuna's Penance. A huge open-air relief carved on a rock face, telling the story of the descent of the Ganga.

Krishna's Butter Ball. A granite boulder about 16 feet tall that seems to balance on a slope, according to Incredible India's Mamallapuram page.

Cave temples. The district page counts nine rock-cut cave temples in the town. Your driver can stop at one or two between the main monuments.

Best time to go

Incredible India suggests November to February for the most pleasant weather. The Mahabalipuram Dance Festival is held in the cooler months against Arjuna's Penance, and its dates change each year. April to June is hot, so plan monuments for early morning and late afternoon. The North-East monsoon brings heavy rain to this coast, usually October to December.

Frequently asked questions

Can we do this as a day trip from Chennai?

Yes, the main monuments fit in one long day. The overnight stay lets you see the Shore Temple lit up in the evening and the beach in the morning without rushing.

Can we add Pondicherry or Kanchipuram?

Is the Kovalam stop the Kerala beach?

No. This Kovalam, also called Covelong, is a fishing village beach on the East Coast Road near Chennai. Kerala's Kovalam is a different place on the other coast, and you can see it on our Varkala and Kovalam beach trip.

How do we pay, and what if we cancel?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.
