It suits couples and small groups who want a quiet hill break with short walks and no crowds. We run it from our office in Ganapathy, Coimbatore, in our own vehicles with our own drivers.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Drive up to Vagamon, pine forest, Kurisumala and the lake

    We leave Coimbatore early. After the climb into the hills you stop at the pine forest, then drive to Kurisumala Ashram at the foot of the hill. Evening at Vagamon Lake, a small lake ringed by tea bushes. Night in Vagamon.

  2. Day 2: Marmala waterfall, the meadows, Suicide Point

    Morning trip to Marmala waterfall, which needs a walk from the road. Access can close in heavy rain, and if it is closed we swap in another stop nearby. Afternoon on the grassy meadows, then Suicide Point for the view over the valley. Night in Vagamon.

  3. Day 3: Pine Valley, Thangal Para, return to Coimbatore

    After breakfast you see Pine Valley and Thangal Para, then we drive back to Coimbatore for your drop.

How far is it from Coimbatore?

The Coimbatore to Vagamon distance is roughly 245 km by road through Palakkad, Thrissur and Thodupuzha, around 5 to 6 hours with a meal stop. That is why we do not offer a Vagamon one day tour package from Coimbatore: you would spend about 11 hours in the vehicle for a few hours in the hills.

Places you will see

Vagamon sits about 1,100 metres above sea level and is known for its tea gardens and meadows, according to the Kottayam district page on Vagamon.

Vagamon Kurisumala. Kurisumala means "mountain of the holy cross". A Trappist monastery and the ashram sit at the foothills, and pilgrims climb to the church at the top, especially on Good Friday. The Idukki DTPC page on Kurisumala lists it as one of Vagamon's three famous hills.

Thangal Para. A rock hill with the tomb of a Sufi saint, and the second of those three hills. See the Idukki DTPC page on Thangal Para.

The lake and the meadows. The lake is small and calm, and the grassy meadows sit right beside it. Vagamon boating is paid at the counter, and boat types and timings change, so we check them for your date.

Pine forest. Planted in British times on the Vagamon to Elappara road. The Vagamon pine forest entry is paid at the gate.

Best time to go

September to May is the usual season, with clear mornings and cool evenings. The monsoon makes the meadows very green but brings mist, slippery paths and closed viewpoints on some days. December and January nights can be cold, so pack a jacket.

Which stops should we pick if we are short on time?

Kurisumala, the meadows, the pine forest and Thangal Para. All four are on this plan. If time runs short on Day 2 because of rain, we keep the meadows and the pine forest and move the rest to Day 3 morning.

Can we add Thekkady to this Vagamon tour package?

Yes, with one extra night. Thekkady is a separate hill area with the Periyar boat ride. If Thekkady matters more to you than Vagamon, our Thekkady weekend trip will suit you better. Longer options are the Munnar and Thekkady 5-day tour. The Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey 5-day trip adds the backwaters, and a 4-day Munnar and Thekkady plan is shorter.

Can the plan be longer?

This 3-day plan is our standard trip. We can stretch it to 4 days with a slower pace. All our trips start and end in Coimbatore. Ask us when you send your dates. For tea hills instead, see our 2-day Munnar trip.

How do we pay, and what if we cancel?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.
