Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Thekkady, spice plantation and cultural show

    We leave Coimbatore in the morning and reach Thekkady by early afternoon. Your driver picks the route on the day based on traffic and road conditions. After check-in, you walk a spice plantation in Kumily with a local guide and see how cardamom, pepper and other spices grow. In the evening, you watch a cultural show in town. Which show runs and when changes by date, so we confirm it in your quote.

  2. Day 2: Periyar boating, optional elephant activity and return

    An early start gets you to the boat landing for a ride on Periyar lake. Afterwards, there is time for an optional elephant activity if you want one, then the drive back to Coimbatore. Entry to that activity depends on the forest department on the day; if it is closed, we swap in another stop nearby.

How far is Thekkady from Coimbatore?

Thekkady is a long day's drive from Coimbatore, around 6 to 7 hours with stops, longer on season weekends. Because each day has a long drive, this trip suits travellers who are happy to sit in a vehicle. Tell us if you would rather take 3 days instead.

Places you will see

Kerala Tourism's Thekkady guide describes the Periyar Tiger Reserve as 777 sq km, with about 26 sq km of lake at its centre, formed by the Mullaperiyar dam. Boat rides on the lake let you watch animals at the water's edge from a safe distance. What you see is up to the animals, so treat sightings as a bonus.

Kumily is the plantation town at the edge of the reserve. Kerala Tourism notes that Kumily's spice plantations grow cloves, nutmeg, pepper, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom and turmeric, and that much of Kerala's cardamom comes from this area. A plantation walk is the easiest way to see all of it in an hour.

The Periyar Tiger Reserve website runs online booking for boating, trekking and other forest programmes.

Best time to go

Thekkady is open all year. Kerala Tourism gives temperatures of about 13 degrees C in December and January and about 30 degrees C in April and May. October to March is the most comfortable time for a weekend trip. In the monsoon, from June to September, the forest is at its greenest, but rain can cut boating or slow the drive.

What if the Periyar boat tickets sell out?

The forest department runs the boats and the seats are limited, so they can sell out on weekends and holidays. Boat timings and booking rules change by season, so we check them for your date. If there are no seats, entry to other forest programmes depends on the forest department on the day, and we swap in another stop nearby.

What does the package include?

It includes an AC vehicle with driver for both days, Coimbatore pickup and drop, one night in a 3-star or similar hotel, and fuel, toll, parking, driver charges and the Kerala vehicle permit and entry tax. Boat tickets, the cultural show, the plantation fee and meals are paid separately.

Can we change the plan?

Yes. You can skip the cultural show, swap the plantation for a jeep ride or stretch the trip to three days. Tell us before we confirm, as extra days or kilometres change the quote.

Which vehicle will we get?

We match the vehicle to your group: sedans, Ertiga, Innova, Innova Crysta and Innova Hycross, Tempo Travellers, Force Urbania, or a coach van or bus for big groups. The vehicle is named in your quote.

How do payment and cancellation work?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.

Who should pick a different package?
