How do I travel from Coimbatore to Pondicherry?

Pondicherry is about 380 km from Coimbatore by road, a drive of around 7 hours with breaks. A private car with a driver takes you door to door and lets you stop when you like, which matters on a trip this long. Our trips start and end in Coimbatore.

Because the drive is long, we do not recommend a one day trip. The shortest plan we run is the Pondicherry 3 Days Tour Package.

What is there to see in Pondicherry?

The French East India Company set up a trading post here in 1674, and the town passed between the French, Dutch and British before it became part of India in 1954. That history shows in the grid of streets, the old churches and the seafront.

  • Promenade Beach. The seafront walk along Goubert Avenue, with heritage buildings behind it. The beach itself has lost most of its sand.
  • Sri Aurobindo Ashram. On Rue de la Marine, founded by the freedom fighter and philosopher Sri Aurobindo and one of the best known ashrams in India.
  • Auroville. An experimental township north of the town, inaugurated on 28 February 1968, with the Matrimandir at its centre.
  • Manakula Vinayagar Temple. A Ganesha temple on Manakula Vinayagar Street that predates the French settlement.
  • Old churches. The town has many large churches, most built in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Rules for Auroville and the Matrimandir, such as visiting passes, are set by Auroville and can change, so we confirm them for your date.

What does a Pondicherry trip cost from Coimbatore?

The 3 day plan starts at ₹12,500 per person. One price covers the AC vehicle, driver, fuel, toll, parking and a 3-star hotel. Meals, entry tickets and personal expenses are extra.

A Pondicherry tour package from Coimbatore is priced per person, so the Pondicherry packages below compare fairly. Whether you call it a Pondicherry package, a Pondicherry travel package or one of the Pondicherry holiday packages, the cover is the same: vehicle, driver, fuel, toll, parking and hotel. One clarification: we are a Coimbatore operator, not a travel agency in Pondicherry. If you are looking for travels in Pondicherry or tours and travels in Pondicherry for a trip that starts there, we are not the right fit, because every trip we run starts and ends in Coimbatore.

Can I combine Pondicherry with Mahabalipuram and Thanjavur?

Yes. The Thanjavur Pondicherry Mahabalipuram Tour Package turns the long drive into a loop through Chola and Pallava sites. See the Thanjavur, Mahabalipuram and Kumbakonam pages for what each adds, and the Tamil Nadu tour packages page for the long circuits.

When is the best time to visit Pondicherry?

January to March is the comfortable window for walking and sightseeing. The dry season runs from January to June, but March to early June is hot, and Pondicherry gets most of its rain from mid-October to December during the north-east monsoon. June to September brings humidity and occasional thundershowers.

Plan the beach and seafront walks for early morning or evening.

Can I visit Thirunallar from Pondicherry?

Thirunallar, the Shani (Saturn) temple among the nine Navagraha temples, is in Karaikal district, which is part of the Union Territory of Puducherry. It is on the route of our Navagraha Temple Tour, which starts and ends in Coimbatore like every other trip. Ask us if you want to link it with a Pondicherry stay.

Why is Pondicherry different from other Tamil Nadu trips?

The French held the town on and off from 1674 until the de facto transfer to India on 1 November 1954. The Promenade was selected for Blue Flag certification, and Wikipedia describes the seafront as one of the cleanest in India. Most of our Tamil Nadu trips are temple circuits, so Pondicherry is the one that suits a relaxed seafront break with colonial streets and an ashram.

If you want both, the 5 day plan above joins Pondicherry to Thanjavur's Chola temples and Mahabalipuram's rock carvings.
