Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Nelliyampathy via Palakkad and Pothundy Dam

    A late-morning start is fine on this trip. We drive through Palakkad to Nemmara, stop at Pothundy Dam at the foot of the hills, then take the hairpin road up to Nelliyampathy. Evening at the resort.

  2. Day 2: Seethakundu viewpoint, Kesavanpara, tea and orange plantations

    A slow day in the hills. Morning at Seethakundu viewpoint, then Kesavanpara, a rock viewpoint over the plains. The afternoon is for the tea estates and the orange farm. Night in Nelliyampathy.

  3. Day 3: Palakkad Fort, Malampuzha Dam and gardens, return to Coimbatore

    We come down to Palakkad for the old fort in the middle of town, then Malampuzha Dam and its gardens, and drive back to Coimbatore by evening.

How far is it from Coimbatore?

Nelliyampathy is about 123 km from Coimbatore airport, according to the Palakkad district page, so expect around 2.5 to 3.5 hours by road with the climb. The last stretch after Nemmara is a narrow hairpin road, and our drivers take it slowly.

Places you will see

Nelliyampathy sits between 467 and 1,572 metres above sea level. The Palakkad district page on Nelliyampathy lists the Seethakundu (Sitharkundu) and Kesavanpara viewpoints, the tea, cardamom and coffee estates, the Agriculture Department's orange and vegetable farm, and Pothundy, an earth dam with a garden on the way up.

Palakkad Fort is in the middle of the town and open from 8 am to 6 pm, according to the Palakkad district page on the fort.

Malampuzha garden is about 10 km from Palakkad, with lawns, a rose garden and an aerial ropeway, and a rock garden half a kilometre away. Timings are on the Palakkad district gardens page.

Best time to go

September to February is the most pleasant time, with clear views from Seethakundu. In the monsoon the hills are green and the mist rolls in fast, which some people love and others find limits the views. The Palakkad plains get hot in April and May, but the hilltop stays cooler.

Can we add Silent Valley National Park?

Silent Valley is in another part of Palakkad district, about 40 km northwest of Mannarkkad, and entry runs through the forest department's own visits. It needs at least one extra day. Ask us and we will check forest entry availability for your dates.

Is the hairpin road safe for elderly travellers or anyone who gets car sick?

The road is narrow with many tight bends. Our drivers go slowly and stop when you need to. If anyone in your group gets car sick, bring tablets and sit in the front row.

Is there mobile signal and an ATM up the hill?

Signal can be patchy on the hills, so carry some cash with you.

Who should choose a different package?

If you only have one day, our Palakkad heritage day tour covers the fort, Malampuzha and Kalpathy. If you only want the dam and gardens, the Malampuzha day trip is shorter. How do we pay, and what if we cancel?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.
