Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Kumarakom, Vembanad Lake cruise and sunset

    We leave Coimbatore in the morning and reach Kumarakom in the afternoon. After check-in, you go out on Vembanad Lake by boat as the sun sets. The boat type depends on the day, and your written quote states exactly what is included. The evening is yours at the hotel.

  2. Day 2: Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, village experience and return

    Birds are most active early, so the sanctuary walk starts soon after sunrise. Later in the morning, you visit a nearby village to see daily life on the canals. After lunch, we drive back to Coimbatore and drop you at your pickup point.

How far is Kumarakom from Coimbatore?

Kumarakom is roughly 220 to 250 km from Coimbatore by road via Palakkad, Thrissur and Kochi, around 4.5 to 5.5 hours with stops. With one night, each day has a long drive. A 3-day version is easy to arrange if you want a full free day by the lake.

Places you will see

Kerala Tourism's Kumarakom page describes it as a cluster of islands on the eastern banks of Vembanad Lake, about 14 km from Kottayam. Vembanad is Kerala's largest lake, and Kumarakom is on its quieter eastern shore, across the water from Alappuzha.

The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary covers 14 acres on the lake shore. Kerala Tourism lists egrets, herons, kingfishers, darters and cormorants as residents, plus teals, pintails and other ducks in the migrant season. Paths run through the trees, so you can walk at your own pace.

Best time to go

For birds, Kerala Tourism suggests November to February to see migrants and June to August for resident species. October to March is the most pleasant weather for a lake weekend. In the heavy rain months, the sunset cruise can be cancelled at short notice.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as the Alleppey houseboat trip?

Not quite. Alleppey and Kumarakom share Vembanad Lake, but Kumarakom is on the Kottayam side and you sleep in a hotel or resort on land. If your main wish is a night on a houseboat, an Alleppey trip like our 2-day Alleppey houseboat trip suits you better.

Is a houseboat included?

No, this package uses a lakeside stay on land plus a sunset boat cruise. If you want a houseboat night, ask us to switch the stay. That changes the price, and you would board from a different jetty.

Can we change the plan?

Yes. You can skip the village visit, add a second night or move the cruise to the morning. Tell us before we confirm your quote.

Which vehicle will we get?

We match it to your group: sedans, Ertiga, Innova, Innova Crysta and Innova Hycross for small groups, Tempo Travellers and Force Urbania for larger ones, and coach vans or buses for big groups. The quote names the vehicle.

How do payment and cancellation work?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.
