Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Madurai, Nayakkar Mahal, Teppakulam and Meenakshi temple

    Leave Coimbatore early and reach Madurai around midday. The main temple closes in the early afternoon, so we start at Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal and Teppakulam, then go to the Meenakshi Amman Temple when it reopens at 4 pm. Stay for the evening. If you want the palace sound and light show, we return there after the temple. Overnight in Madurai.

  2. Day 2: Alagar Kovil, Pazhamudircholai, Gandhi Museum and return

    Drive out to Alagar Kovil in the morning, then up the same hill to Pazhamudircholai. Back in the city, visit the Gandhi Museum, have lunch and start the drive to Coimbatore.

How far / how to reach

Madurai is about 215 km from Coimbatore by road via Dindigul, roughly 4.5 to 5 hours with a breakfast stop. The same drive back on Day 2 gets you home by evening. Other trips from the city are on our Madurai page and the Tamil Nadu packages list.

Places you will see

The Madurai district page on the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple describes a complex of about 65,000 sq m, greatly expanded under Thirumalai Nayak (1623 to 1655), with a Hall of Thousand Pillars and musical pillars. It lists timings of 5 am to 12.30 pm and 4 pm to 9.30 pm, which is why Day 1 is planned around the afternoon break.

Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal, about 1.5 km from the temple, was built in 1636. The district's palace page lists a sound and light show in English at 6.45 pm and in Tamil at 8.15 pm. Teppakulam is a 16-acre temple tank about 4 km east of the temple, where the float festival is held in January or February.

Alagar Kovil and Pazhamudircholai, two famous temples around Madurai, sit together on the same hill north of the city. The district's Azhagar Kovil page places the Vishnu temple about 21 km north-east of the city, with Pazhamudircholai, one of Murugan's six abodes, on top of the same hill. The Gandhi Museum is housed in the old palace of Rani Mangammal.

Best time to go

October to March is the most comfortable; April and May are very hot by midday. Festival weeks, such as the Chithirai festival, bring big crowds and road closures near the temple. Tell us your dates and we will flag any festival clash.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as hiring a car in Madurai?

No. The car and driver start from Coimbatore and stay with you for both days, so you do not need a car rental in Madurai once you arrive. One quote covers the drive, the city and the hotel.

Can a large group travel together?

Can we do Madurai in one day instead?

A Madurai one day tour package is possible, but you lose the evening at the temple and Alagar Kovil, because the drive takes 9 to 10 hours both ways. With only one day, we drop Day 2 and drive back after the temple.

Can we add Rameswaram?

Who is this package not for?

What are the payment and cancellation terms?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.
