Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Dandeli, check-in and an evening nature walk

    This is a travel day. Dandeli is about 705 km from Coimbatore by road, a drive of around 13 to 14 hours with stops. We leave very early, before dawn, and the evening nature walk near your stay happens only if you arrive in daylight.

  2. Day 2: Kali River rafting, kayaking, a coracle ride and other activities

    The main day. Karnataka Tourism's rafting page says the Kali has Class II to III rapids, the run is 9 to 12 km depending on water released from Supa Dam, and rafting usually runs from October to June depending on dam flow and forest permission. Kayaking and coracle rides are on calmer stretches. Other activities, such as a zip line, are added only where the operator holds approval. The activities on the day depend on the operator, and your quote lists what is booked.

  3. Day 3: Jungle safari, Syntheri Rocks and the return journey

    An early jeep safari in the Kali Tiger Reserve. Karnataka Tourism's Kali Tiger Reserve page lists two safari slots, 6 to 8 am and 4 to 6 pm, reporting at Phansoli. After the safari, see Syntheri Rocks, then start the long drive home.

    The drive back to Coimbatore on Day 3 is very long, about 13 hours, so expect to reach Coimbatore late at night or after midnight. We drop you at your pickup point. If you would rather not do it in one go, an extra night on the way can be added on request, and we write it into your quote.

How far / how to reach

Dandeli is about 705 km from Coimbatore. By road it is a full day each way. If you would rather fly or take a train part of the way and meet our vehicle in north Karnataka, ask us and we tell you what is possible.

What you will see in Dandeli

With the travel day set aside, this plan gives you two full days on the ground. For the places to visit in Dandeli for 2 days, that means one river day and one jungle day.

Kali River. Rafting, kayaking and coracles all happen here. Life jackets and trained guides are mandatory, according to Karnataka Tourism.

Kali Tiger Reserve. The Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary page lists elephants, gaur, sloth bears and barking deer, over 300 bird species, and calls Dandeli one of the few places in India with frequent black panther sightings. Sightings are never guaranteed.

Syntheri Rocks. A tall granite rock inside the forest with the river rushing past its base.

Best time to go

Karnataka Tourism names October to March as the best time for the sanctuary. Rafting runs roughly October to June, depending on the dam. In the June to September monsoon, rafting and some forest roads can close.

Frequently asked questions

How does this trip compare with a standard two-night Dandeli package?

Most Dandeli packages price only the stay and activities and assume you are already nearby. From Coimbatore, you also need the long drive both ways, so a 3-day trip is the shortest that leaves two real days in Dandeli.

Can you do a one-night Dandeli trip from Coimbatore?

Not sensibly. A one-night trip suits people who live a few hours away. From Coimbatore, one night after 13 or more hours on the road leaves almost no time for rafting. A Dandeli one day package only works if you already live in north Karnataka or Goa.

What if the safari is full or rafting is closed?

Safari seats are run by the forest department and fill up, so we book them as soon as you confirm. If rafting is closed because of dam flow, you still get kayaking or a coracle ride where allowed. You pay activity fees on the day, so you do not pay for what does not run.

Is rafting safe for non-swimmers?

You wear a life jacket and go with a trained guide. Age and health rules are set by the operator. Tell us if anyone in the group has a heart or back problem.

Who should pick a different package?

How do we pay, and what if we cancel?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.
