Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Valparai and back

    5:00 AM. Pickup and drive south through Pollachi. The early start gets you onto the ghat before traffic.

    Morning. Aliyar viewpoint, then the climb. The Coimbatore district page on Valparai counts around 40 hairpin bends from the Pollachi plains. Loam's View Point, partway up, looks back down over the bends and the Aliyar reservoir.

    Midday and afternoon. Tea-estate photo stops around Valparai town, lunch, then Nallamudi viewpoint if the road is open and the clock allows. Access to Nallamudi depends on the estate and the road on the day; if it is closed, we swap in another stop nearby.

    Late afternoon. Start down before dark. The district page calls the area an elephant tract, and we do not want you on the bends late at night. Back in Coimbatore by about 9:30 PM.

How far / how to reach

The Pollachi to Valparai distance is 64 km, and Valparai is 102 km from Coimbatore, per the district page. Most of the time goes on the ghat section, not the plains. If you are staying in Pollachi, this also works as a one day trip from Pollachi, and we can pick you up there.

Places you will see

Valparai sits above 3,500 feet in the Anamalai range, surrounded by tea and coffee estates. Lion-tailed macaques and Nilgiri tahr live in these hills, per the district page; sightings are luck, not a promise. Aliyar Dam, 81 metres high, is described on the district Aliyar Dam page.

Best time to go

The district page names October to November and March to May as the best months. In the monsoon, landslips and fog can close viewpoints or slow the ghat, and we reconfirm road conditions the day before.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a Coimbatore to Valparai train?

No. Valparai has no railway. The nearest station is Pollachi, 64 km below, as the district's how-to-reach note says, and the rest is by road. We pick you up from Coimbatore Junction if you arrive by train.

Is one day enough for Valparai?

For the drive, viewpoints and estates, yes. For waterfalls, dams like Sholayar or wildlife, stay over: our Valparai and Pollachi 3-day trip is slower and easier.

Who should not take this trip?

Anyone who gets car sick on bends, families with very young children and older travellers who find a 16-hour day hard. The Pollachi, Aliyar and Monkey Falls tour stays on the plains.

Can we add Monkey Falls or Topslip?

Not on this day. The plan is limited-stop on purpose, and adding them means returning in the dark. Monkey Falls sits near Aliyar on the same road and is open 9 AM to 5 PM, per the Coimbatore district page on Kavi Aruvi, so it fits better on a slower trip. How do payment and cancellation work?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.
