Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Ooty, the lake and the Botanical Garden

    Pickup in Coimbatore and a drive up through Mettupalayam. Check in, then spend the afternoon at Ooty Lake and the Botanical Garden. The district page on Ooty's main sights says the lake was formed in 1824 and covers 65 acres, with boating at the boat house. Ooty Lake timings and Botanical Garden hours can shift by season, so the driver checks before you go.

  2. Day 2: Coonoor sightseeing

    A full day in Coonoor: Sim's Park, Lamb's Rock, Dolphin's Nose and the tea gardens. Lamb's Rock looks over the Coimbatore plains, and Dolphin's Nose faces Catherine Falls, according to the Nilgiris district page on Lamb's Rock. Back to Ooty for the second night.

  3. Day 3: Doddabetta, Rose Garden, Pykara and return

    Doddabetta first, then the Rose Garden, then west through the pine forest to Pykara. The Pykara page says the lake is about 21 km from Ooty, with boating, and the falls, the last two drops of 55 m and 61 m, are about 20 km out. These are the best-known Ooty waterfalls on this route. Drive back to Coimbatore in the evening.

How far / how to reach: bus, train or our vehicle

Many people first look at the Coimbatore to Ooty bus. It is cheap, but you then need an Ooty cab rental for sightseeing, and Coonoor becomes a separate trip. The toy train runs between Mettupalayam and Ooty on a metre gauge line, as the district's Doddabetta page notes under How to Reach. Ooty train booking is through Indian Railways; we do not sell tickets, but we can drop you at Mettupalayam and meet you in Ooty. The nearest airport to Ooty is Coimbatore.

Places you will see

Doddabetta is the highest peak in Tamil Nadu at 2,623 m. The Botanical Garden covers 55 acres. Pykara Lake is the quietest stop of the trip, with open water and grassland around it. The Ooty Botanical Garden entry fee, boating charges and Doddabetta tickets are paid on the spot.

Best time to go

March to June is the dry season in Ooty, and the Botanical Garden holds its flower show around May, with dates set each year. Ooty rain is heaviest in the monsoon, when fog slows the ghat road. Can we visit Ooty in December? Yes, but nights are cold, so pack warm clothes.

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.
