Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Kabini, river cruise and evening nature activity

    We leave Coimbatore early so you reach Kabini by early afternoon. After check-in, take a boat cruise on the Kabini backwaters, where elephants often come down to the water's edge. In the evening, join a nature walk or talk if your resort runs one.

  2. Day 2: Nagarhole safari, then back to Coimbatore

    Early start for the morning safari, if we have secured a slot. Back to the resort for breakfast, check out, and drive back to Coimbatore for an evening drop at your pickup point.

How far is Kabini from Coimbatore?

Kabini is about 230 km from Coimbatore, around 4.5 to 5.5 hours each way with stops. We choose the route based on forest road timings and traffic.

Places you will see

The Mysuru district page on the Kabini river explains that the Kabini dam near Sargur creates a large reservoir. In summer the water drops and leaves grassy meadows along the backwaters, which draw wildlife.

Nagarhole, also called Rajiv Gandhi National Park, spreads across Kodagu and Mysuru districts, according to the Kodagu district page. The name means "cobra river" in Kannada. Karnataka Tourism describes about 640 sq km of forest with tigers, leopards, gaur and large elephant herds, seen by jeep or by boat.

Best time to visit Nagarhole National Park

Karnataka Tourism notes that sightings of big cats improve as summer approaches, when the forest dries out and animals gather near water. That makes March to May the best time for sightings, though it is hot by midday. October to February is cooler and greener. During the monsoon, safari routes can be cut short.

How the safari works

Safaris inside Nagarhole are run by the Karnataka Forest Department, and seats are limited. Bookings go through the Nagarahole Tiger Reserve website, which belongs to the forest department. Some resorts, such as the government-run Jungle Lodges, include safaris in their stay. We book safari seats once your dates are fixed, when they are available. If they are full, we suggest a second boat trip or a resort-run nature walk instead. Safari timings and fees are set by the forest department and change by season, so we confirm them for your dates.

Frequently asked questions

Is Kabini a good weekend trip from Coimbatore?

For wildlife, yes. One night at Kabini gives you an evening on the water and a morning safari, which is the most a weekend from Coimbatore can hold. If you want hills instead, try a Coorg or Chikmagalur weekend.

What if the safari slot sells out?

Safari seats are run by the forest department and sell out, especially on weekends. We book them when available. If we cannot, you still get the boat cruise and a resort nature activity, and we tell you before you pay.

Can we see a tiger for sure?

No one can promise a tiger. Elephants, deer and gaur are common; big cats are a matter of luck.

Can we add Mysore?

Yes, but it needs an extra night. Our Mysore family holiday or a 3-day Kabini plan works better.

How do payment and cancellation work?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.

Who is this package not for?

Families with toddlers may find early starts and long drives tiring. The Masinagudi and Mudumalai weekend is a shorter drive from Coimbatore.
