Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Karaikudi, Kanadukathan mansions, Athangudi tiles and dinner

    Leave Coimbatore early. After check-in in Karaikudi, walk the lanes of Kanadukathan to see the mansions from the street and, where owners allow, inside. Entry rules and fees vary by mansion, so we check them for your date. Then visit a tile unit in Athangudi, and end with a Chettinad dinner. Overnight in Karaikudi.

  2. Day 2: The palace, antique market, Pillayarpatti and return

    Morning at the palace in Kanadukathan, then the antique market in Karaikudi. Stop at Pillayarpatti temple, have lunch, and drive back to Coimbatore, with drop-off at your pickup point.

How far / how to reach

Karaikudi is about 255 km from Coimbatore, around 4.5 to 5.5 hours with stops. Kanadukathan is close to Karaikudi, and Athangudi and Pillayarpatti are short drives from town. See more on our Chettinad page and the Tamil Nadu packages list.

Places you will see

The Sivaganga district's places of interest page describes Kanadukathan's huge Chettinad-style houses with doorways carved like temple gates, and notes that the town is known for its local food. It also lists Athangudi, 24 km from Karaikudi, for handmade tiles that are shaped, sun-dried and patterned by hand. If you are buying, ask the unit for sizes and delivery to Coimbatore.

The same page describes the Chettinad Palace, built by Dr. Annamalai Chettiar and dated to 1912, with teak and granite pillars around a central courtyard. Access to the interior is often limited, so you may only see the outside and the front verandah.

Pillayarpatti Karpaga Vinayagar Temple is listed on the district's tourism places page as one of the oldest rock-cut cave temples in Tamil Nadu, 12 km from Karaikudi. The district's spiritual places page notes the six-foot Vinayagar with two hands, unlike the usual four, and over 15 inscriptions in the temple.

Best time to go

November to February is cool enough for walking the mansion streets. Summer afternoons in Karaikudi are hot, so we keep walks for the morning and evening. Vinayagar Chathurthi in August or September is Pillayarpatti's main 10-day festival, with heavy crowds.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Pillayarpatti temple timings?

The Sivaganga district lists 6 am to 1 pm and 4 pm to 8.30 pm. We plan it for late morning on Day 2 so you get darshan before the midday closing.

Can we go inside the Chettinad Palace?

Not always. The inside is often closed to visitors, and we confirm access before your trip. Kanadukathan and Athangudi still give you plenty of mansion interiors to see.

Can you help us ship Athangudi tiles home?

We can take you to the unit and carry small purchases in the vehicle. Bulk orders and shipping are arranged directly with the maker.

Can we add Madurai or temples?

Yes, with extra days. Pillayarpatti is about 71 km from Madurai, so our Madurai weekend trip pairs well. For Chola temples, see the Thanjavur and Kumbakonam trip, or the 5-day Kumbakonam and Chettinad trail. For the coast, try Velankanni and Nagore in 3 days.

Who is this package not for?

People who want a packed sightseeing list or cool weather. Chettinad is slow, warm and best on foot.

What are the payment and cancellation terms?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.
