Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Munnar

    About 160 km by Pollachi, Udumalpet and Chinnar. Check in and rest.

  2. Day 2: Munnar sightseeing

    A full day in Munnar. Most families pick Eravikulam National Park, Mattupetty Dam, Echo Point and the tea museum. Your driver may change the order on the day to beat crowds or weather.

  3. Day 3: Munnar to Thekkady, Periyar boat ride

    Drive to Thekkady and take the boat ride on Periyar lake in the afternoon if seats are available.

  4. Day 4: Thekkady to Alleppey, houseboat cruise

    Down from the hills to Alleppey, where you board your houseboat and spend the night on the backwaters.

  5. Day 5: Alleppey to Kovalam, Lighthouse Beach

    The coast road south passes Kollam, the town on Ashtamudi Lake, which people often call the second largest lake in Kerala. You reach Kovalam by afternoon for the Lighthouse Beach. The drive is around 4 to 5 hours with stops, longer on season weekends.

  6. Day 6: Trivandrum sights and Poovar

    Trivandrum, about 13 km away, for the city's sights, then a boat ride at Poovar where the Neyyar river meets the sea. We pick the Trivandrum stops with you on the day, and your driver may change the order to beat crowds or weather.

  7. Day 7: Kovalam back to Coimbatore

    A full day's drive home, about 450 km and roughly 9 to 10 hours with stops.

How far / how to reach

The whole trip is by road in one vehicle. The longest legs are Day 5 down the coast and Day 7 home from Kovalam. Days 1, 3 and 4 are half-day drives.

Places you will see

Munnar and Eravikulam. Kerala Tourism's Eravikulam page covers the Nilgiri tahr zone at Rajamalai and Anamudi, the highest peak in South India.

Thekkady. The Kerala Tourism Thekkady guide describes the 777 sq km reserve and the boat ride on the lake at its centre. Boat tickets are sold on the Periyar Tiger Reserve booking site.

Alleppey and Ashtamudi. Vembanad, where your houseboat cruises, is the largest lake in Kerala, per Kerala Tourism's Alappuzha guide. The Ashtamudi Lake page calls Ashtamudi the gateway to Kerala's backwaters.

Kovalam and Poovar. Kovalam is 16 km from Thiruvananthapuram, and its Lighthouse Beach has the red and white Vizhinjam lighthouse at its south end.

Best time to go

October to March gives you cool hills and calm beaches on the same trip. Eravikulam is closed from February to March for the tahr calving season, per Kerala Tourism. From June to September the hills are wet and the Kovalam sea is rough, though houseboats still run.

The price is ₹19,999 to ₹34,999 per person, based on 2 travelling together. Send your dates, number of adults and children, and pickup point. We send a written quote naming the vehicle and every stay. For a week on the road, most families of five to seven choose an Innova or Innova Crysta; larger groups take a Tempo Traveller or Force Urbania.

Frequently asked questions

Do we have the same driver throughout?

Yes. One vehicle and one driver stay with you from pickup in Coimbatore to drop on Day 7, so you do not change cars or meet new drivers along the way.

Can we stop at the pine forest in Vagamon?

It is not in the plan. Vagamon is a detour from the Thekkady to Alleppey road on Day 4 and would cut into your houseboat time. Ask and we will tell you whether it fits your dates. For a hill break there alone, see our Vagamon 3-day trip.

What if the Periyar boat ride is sold out?

The forest department runs it, and seats go fast in season. If there are none, you get a spice plantation walk in Kumily instead. We tell you in advance if your dates look busy.

Can we end in Trivandrum or Kochi instead of driving back?

No. All our trips start and end in Coimbatore, so Day 7 is the drive home and drop-off at your pickup point.

How do payment and cancellation work?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.

Who is this package not for?

If you have only five days, pick the Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey 5-day trip or the Alleppey and Kovalam 5-day trip. With six days, the Munnar, Athirapally and Kumarakom 6-day trip is a lighter option. For the south only, try the Kovalam and Poovar 4-day trip.
