Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Doddabetta, the garden and one more stop

    5:30 AM. Pickup and the Mettupalayam to Ooty ghat road while it is quiet.

    Morning. Doddabetta, the highest peak in Tamil Nadu at 2,623 metres, per the Nilgiris district Doddabetta page. It is about 10 km from the Ooty bus stand on the Kotagiri road, and clear mornings give the best view.

    Midday. The Botanical Garden in Ooty, a 55-acre garden with a fern house and fossil tree, according to the district garden page. Lunch in town.

    Afternoon, your choice. Ooty Lake, a 65-acre lake with TTDC boating described on the Ooty Lake page, or a tea factory and tea museum that visitors can walk through, such as the Doddabetta tea factory. Your driver may pick a different factory on the day, depending on crowds.

    5:00 PM. Leave Ooty, back in Coimbatore by about 9:00 PM. Weekend traffic and fog can stretch this.

Ooty is 89 km from Coimbatore by road via Mettupalayam, per the Nilgiris how-to-reach page. Coimbatore airport is the nearest airport.

Places you will see

These three stops cover the main sights without rushing. The stops also suit children: the garden lawns, the lake boats and the telescope house at Doddabetta. Rose Garden, Pykara and the rest belong on a longer trip.

Best time to go

The district garden page names April, May and September as the best months. Monsoon fog can hide the view at Doddabetta.

Frequently asked questions

Can we ride the toy train?

Not on this plan. The Mettupalayam to Ooty toy train runs to fixed timings that do not fit a same-day return. If you want it, ask us to plan around your ticket, and check current timings on the Indian Railways site before you book.

Can we fly to Ooty?

No. There is no Coimbatore to Ooty flight, since Ooty has no airport; fly into Coimbatore and we collect you.

What are the Doddabetta peak timings?

Opening hours change by season, so we check them for your travel date. We reach Doddabetta mid-morning.

Can we add a chocolate factory stop or more sights?

Only by dropping one core stop. The day is already about 15 hours.

Is there an entry fee at the tea factory?

Entry fees at the factory are paid at the gate and are not part of the package.

Should we stay in Ooty instead?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.
